while possible, it most certainly is not recommended to use a splitter cable - there are both performance and stability issues associated with such a thing.

So, are you saying having an internal SSD AND this esata port from OWC via the same (new) sata port on the iMac motherboard is not practical? Would there be some other way to do it that doesn't involve moving the internal SSD to the hard drive or optical drive port? More clearly, if a guy owns this new iMac with the SSD option (so it's got the optical drive, a regular hard drive, and the SSD inside), does this OWC sata port option pretty much get ruled out as an option?

The SATA port doesn not seem to support multiplication, so it shouldn't be possible to connect an SSD and an external drive at the same time.

The eSATA port and the SSD upgrade are two separate offerings by OWC.

yeh i dont think it will port - the port multipliers are terribly tempremental!

you could most certainly remove the optical drive, put the SSD in there, and then do the modification for the eSata port. i can see that working. or you could leave the SSD in its original position - remove the optical drive and leave the cable poking out of the optical slot ;)

Most apple authorized service center have no problem doing warranty work on modded macs.

Cheers,

I was curious about this myself so I contacted OWC Tech Support regarding the warranty on this via email August 1st and here is the reply I received:

Q: Does this void my Apple warranty?
A: Nothing being performed should void your warranty entirely, but we cannot guarantee Apple will not void all or part of your warranty.

So at this point OWC doesn't even know if it would void a warranty. For those concerned about warranties my recommendation is caveat emptor.

I like OWC very much as a vendor however at the very least they should post a disclaimer about the possibility of this product voiding the warranty.

Regards,

Roger

hmm that isnt exactly clear about when you can and cant get the SSD. im reserve judgement for now.

It looks like you can get SSD in either/both bays, if you wish, if that's what you're talking about. Obviously if you put a drive in both, you won't get eSATA.

i was more referring to the 27" iMacs that DIDNT come bundled with the SSD - i dont believe they offer a solution for that.

if you have a drive in the SSD slot + mechanical slot, you can still add one into the optibay :D

It looks like OWC will install a SSD if your Mac didn't have one. Looks like you can have HDD and SDD, SDD and SDD, SDD or HDD and eSATA.

id like to see actual proof of this, because the last i read (from one of the workers at OWC) he stated that the "houlsters" didnt appear to be readily available. maybe they came up with something?
