The only comment which I don't think has been covered here is the AppleCare warranty factor.

I had two of my four original 1 GB RAM sticks in my MP 3,1 fail while it was still under AppleCare. Not only did Apple replace the two sticks, but "just to be on the safe side" they also replaced the riser card.

I know places like OWC have lifetime warranties on their RAM, but as a business owner and from a convenience factor, I find it highly efficient to have the entire machine covered under the same warranty and know there's a physical location I can take it to.

Please forgive the cross-posting.

I'd actually like to buy 128 GB of RAM for the new Mac Pro. In another forum, I saw it for a (relatively) very good price here:

I'd need four sticks of RAM, for $3076 total. Not too bad! Does anybody have a better price, from a reputable vendor??

Suggestions are welcome.

Much better price here:

And you will be sure it is compatible.

Mac Pro uses unregistered DIMMs (U-DIMMs) in all memory configurations except 64GB, which uses four 16GB registered DIMMs (R-DIMMs). Registered DIMMs cannot be mixed with unregistered DIMMs.

Thanks for this info. My decision is now down to either buying 2 16GB sticks from Crucial and then upgrading with another set of two down the line if I think I need them OR buying the OWC 64GB set right off the bat and getting $75 for my 3 4GB sticks that will be in my nMP. However, considering shipping I'm only really counting on about a $50 discount. I think I will likely just go for the 64GB off the bat and not worry about it:)

But now I know for sure that I won't be able to just get 2 16GB sticks and use 2 of the 3 4GB sticks for 40GB.

Warranty?

What about the HUGE difference in warranty between Apple (max 1 year +Apple Care) and 3rd-parties RAM (10 year to lifetime)?

Never-ever-again will I stack a full package of Apple RAM in a (n)MP!!! It's just a :apple: rip-off!
