I believe the ram installed is ecc, as SC said they all ship with ecc memory. I have to double check later to make sure the Hynix brand they installed is error correct code

Thanks for your reply!

I've had teh memorey go down TWICE on me. The first time I had to take the desktop in because it would not boot, APPLE said BAD MEMORY. Second time same thing I pulled the bad memory and it booted. Both time I got free replacement, but still a pain. to deal with Next time I'm going 100% apple.

Hi everyone,

I just received my memory from OWC and i now have a total of 40gigs of ram compared to 12. Really strange, but out of the test o have done in cinema 4d r11.5 and after effects CS6, i have not seen a significant difference in render times.. after effects i rendered out the same clip (1440 frames) and when i had 12 gigs or ram it took 2:40 to render and now with 40 gigs it takes 2:21.. does that sound right? should it be quicker?

Also in cinema 4d my on screen preview (not export) the time was exactly the same for both on screen previews...

Perhaps I'm bottlenecked by the stock 7200RPM hard drive? I would certainly see faster render speeds on a SSD?

Any reason why this is?

Try Geekbench or Novabench with the original RAM and the additional RAM only. Then try with both sets in. Check you have the pairs matched up correctly and have the recommended lay out of modules on the risers.
Are they laid out in triple sets on your boards?
Also what GFX card are you using?

My previous geekbench (64bit) with 12gigs was 19450 and with the 40gigs upgrade I was at 20235.. Not a very substantial difference. My ram is aligned the correct way; 8gig sticks on slots 1&2 while I have the apple stock 2gb sticks in 3&4. Vice versa in the other slots; 8gb in 5&6 and 2gb in slots 7&8. My graphics card is the ATI Radeon 5770 1gb VRAM.

I haven't tried the test with just the 32gb sticks in, wouldn't that be a lower score if its less ram?

I figured I would see a very nice improvement in render speeds..

Some software benefits more from a GFX card upgrade if it can use CUDA. Replacing your baseline 5770 with a GTX670 or 570 could boost rendering more than RAM.
Did you check the Memory Installation Utility for the ideal config? Would fitting the modules in matching sets of 3 work faster? 3x2 GB and 3x8 GB or is that only for Sandybridge and later?
When I had 10 GB in my '08 Octo I got higher scores with the smaller modules in slot 1&2 (2x1GB then 4x2GB) and even better improvements in speed when all the slots were filled with the same size modules 8x2GB and raised to 16 GB total.

OWC brand is not available in my country. If I were to go with non-ECC RAM and add it to MP Quad 2009, what details should I look at?

I know it should be DDR3, 1333Mhz (planning on flashing to MP 5,1 later) but besides that, what are the requirements?

I'm trying to save some money here but if it's just not reliable I'd rather spend it for certified ECC RAM.

I was looking at these two:
  • Corsair 16GB KIT DDR3 1333MHz CL9 XMS3 (timing CL9-9-9-24, specification PC10600)
  • Crucial 16GB KIT DDR3 1333MHz CL9 (specification PC10600, timing CL9)

I bought 1 stick of the Corsair 8Gb XMS3 and stuck it in my mac pro which now has completely unmatched RAM (2 Ecc 1Gb sticks and one Ecc 4Gb stick). It seems to work perfectly fine, so I have ordered 3 more sticks for a total of 32Gb non-ECC Ram

This is way cheaper than the ECC options in the UK. Time will tell if it was worth it

Cool sounds good. I will definitely not mix it with ECC RAM, will keep it around just in case.
I want to order 2x8GB sticks.

I have a quad-core 2.8GHz Mac Pro 5.1 with 8GB. It'll be used mostly for photography (Photoshop CS4 (will upgrade at some stage but currently CS4 works fine for me) and Lightroom 3). I'll also do some light/medium home video editing and music recording.

How do "matched pair" memory work if you want more than two memory modules? I mean, I'm not sure if I should upgrade to 16GB now (2x8GB) or for the sake of "matching" need to go to 32GB right away (4x8GB). Is the matching just for two memory modules at a time, or are 3 or even 4 modules matched as well?

Pricewise I was thinking about upgrading to 16GB now (2x8GB), then go to 24 or 32GB later if needed, but "pairing" has got me confused.
I don't think I will ever need 48GB (3x16GB) and the expense of 16GB memory modules compared to 8GB seems like a waste just for the sake of "maybe needed" down the line.
