This is quite moving. I glanced at your blog; I love the photo from your November 20 post.

Thanks for sharing yourself with us.
Thanks, Molly. I appreciate the comment. That photo took me by surprise. I was staying over a long weekend with the host of an annual face-to-face meeting of an online Quaker group's steering committee. That shot presented itself in my borrowed bedroom during a break in our sessions. It's always spoken to me better than any others of the strange empty-yet-filled experience of meditation.

Great entries this week! Kudos.

My contribution to this challenge are two images. First one was simply done with a curtain, door to garden and some sunlight - I did not plan it, I simply saw it during lunch break. If I come across this opportunity for a second time, I will probably grab a stool so that the face is a bit more in the center.

Other picture is just the result of two windows with some reflections.

BARDO https://emptypath.net/2023/02/11/bardo/

Friends have died recently. Others are facing it first hand. My younger siblings have already experienced the death of a spouse or a stroke or life-threatening cancer.

I, meanwhile, have sat with friends dying of AIDS. Held my mother’s hand at her last breath. Hugged my father days before he died in his sleep.

Feared the eventual death of my husband.

Fooled myself that the Crow tat on my left forearm meant I was ready.

Now I can’t pee right and face surgery.

Such silly pride. We all go.

I’m not as ready to live with this as I thought.
I like your blog and your photos : a poet-with-camera 🪶

As a student, the library is the place to be. Thats why I chose to take a photo of myself there this week. I positioned myself with my camera between some bookshelves and cuneiform writing on the windows. This is how this self-portrait came to be that – in a way – represents me as a student and is more than a mere selfie.

Good idea, finding a setting that tells us about you. 😏

Thank you! This is actually how I understand a self portrait in contrast to a selfie. It's not only a photo of myself but the surrounding is also somehow important

I don't think that a self portrait has to inherently capture the background or something "important" to the self in the photo. The big distinction is being purposeful and setting up a camera in someway that is not just held out at arm's length.

That said, what you took I would categorize as an "environmental portrait" that happens to also be a self portrait. In environmental portraits, the background and setting is very much a key aspect of giving context clues to the life or living of the subject. So what you have done is to merge those together in to a well thoughtout "environmental self portrait." 🙂
