I like that you added texture to the top of the box. I understand you need to use that particular red, and you mentioned you may put the logo in red on the black croc skinned top?

Personally, I think that wouldn't look right. The logo would be distorted by the texture, and not crisp and clean lined. Also, if the logo is red on the black, I think that makes the entire package a bit too simplistic and coordinated.

Perhaps you might try putting the logo on the bottom half on the side of the box? I'd also use a color you haven't presented yet. A shade of white would be highly visible.

As far as gender, at this point, I think it's too soon to call it. Once the logo is in place, you have room to manipulate whether or not it's overall effect is masculine or feminine based on the actual logo and the font, placement, and sizing of the logo. You could transform what you've showed us into something that leans more towards feminine, masculine, or retain this present "look", which I'd consider somewhere in between.

I think you did a good job, considering you had specific guidelines. Upon viewing, I wanted to touch this box and feel the texture. I'm not sure if it's just the flash, or if it's actual, but it looks shiny, and I love shiny stuff. :)

I'm female, and this box would attract me if you added a feminine touch (font/logo). I'd expect it to contain lingerie, cosmetics, or similar. But deep down, I'd be secretly hoping it was a special edition U2 handheld macbook. ;)

By the way I'm considering to make the red a little bigger to make and the croc area a bit smaller. Maybe 2/3 red and 1/3 croc. What do you think?

Interesting. The croc top makes me think it would be a product for a woman, as it's women who have crocodile shoes, crocodile purses, etc. I've never seen a product or packaging for a man that used that material. It sounds like I'm in the minority, though.

Stacy Adams shoes, aptly nicknamed "gator shoes" and I've seen a few colognes for men with the croc skin look on the packaging.

My 2 cents; the croc top should extend down lower over the red base. Any logos or product name etc. should be in white or silver, preferably on the croc material.

Um...that is clearly targeted at a male audience and its a little unbalanced.

Stampyhead I guess we think alike, I immediately thought a product for a tacky, big-haired, heavily made-up woman who has a lot of money to spend on gaudy things. I instantly thought 1980s, i'm not sure why (was born '89 so i can't speak of experiences i remember from products then, only what i imagine/see in movies :D). I guess the red is what made some feel like it was masculine, but to me the croc completely made it a woman's product.

Suggestions:
I think the red itself is just the wrong hue. It stood out too much for me, wasn't appealing. Perhaps a few shades darker, slightly more subdued would work better for it. The croc texture and black color is subtle so i would suggest a darker shade to compliment that detail, not outshine it.

I can't really tell what the product is supposed to be (and honestly didn't read much of the thread, skimmed it in a < minute ) but i thought cosmetics. In that case, the materials felt kinda heavy for something I consider "lightness" in packaging to appeal more. Perhaps that's just me. The rigid shape and colors made it stand out for me in a bold, yet unflattering manner. Changing the colors as i suggested above may fix that but i can't say for sure. If i were buying cosmetics, i wouldn't want something that will weigh me down for feel is a burden to apply. Natural, simple, and pure is what seems to work for those kind of products, and i don't get that from this sample. If the product isn't cosmetics i guess that last part is completely useless haha.

Hope that helps.

Neat design. But I agree with most of the other critiques so far.

But...

WHAT IS THE PRODUCT INSIDE IT GOING TO BE???

This may help us critique it better if we know what is inside, and who it is targeted to attract.

I think if this product is meant to attract men, then making the red more prominent would be effective. Otherwise, I would flip it and extend the croc portion. Not sure if I mentioned this before, but good job on your efforts so far. I've never done product packaging, so clearly it's better than I could do. :)
