So I cannot access iDisk within the app on the iPad itself? I still need a PC?

If I recall correctly, Airshare does plug into iDisk, however I don't know if Airshare stores the files locally or if you have to pull them from the cloud everytime. Either way, it does eliminate half the steps.

Mind you there is no way on iPad to save to another application at the moment, so you'd still need to do the whole export then move back to iPad thing when you're docked.

Actually you can write a document then upload it to iWork.com (with a optional password) and invite people to work on it. I then swapped roles (i.e. I pretended I was an invitee) but was unable to click on the email link and edit that document in the iPad but maybe that was just me

If you click on the 'Shared Files' link and then get directed to the web page the document shows up on your screen. Then click the download button. You then get a screen with a full size rendering of your doc. If you then tap once on the document a button appears in the top right that allows you to open the document in the app (pages, numbers...) that created it on your iPad.

I'm very surprised by that. I have a sneaking suspicion that a big update to MobileMe is coming. There's lots they could do. I'd even speculate that they could move iPad from a representation of your main Mac to a representation of MobileMe. ie. iPad is more or less standalone and syncs over the air.

Maybe when they launch the LaLa based iTunes?

(I know, this doesn't help you right now - sorry).

So at the moment it seems to be a battle between iWork + iWork.com, and Air Sharing HD. Neither seem 'great' though. I really really really really hope Apple is working on a solution which is as simple, powerful, and elegant as almost everything else they do...
