I just got a new 15 inch MacBook Pro. When I tried to use "Pages" and save a document I got an error message saying "an error occurred while reading: Permission denied". Is this a paid subscription or do I have another problem? OS 10.12.3

I figured it out. I was trying to save to "Macintosh Hard Drive" icon. When instead I saved it to the "Documents" icon everything went fine.

Thank you. When I moved my files (including about 10,000 pictures) from my external hard drive it took about 3 to 4 hrs. Unfortunately I placed them on to the Hard Drive icon and hence my problem with trying to save "Pages". Thus, should I now move all my files from the Hard drive icon to "Documents"? Then, should I send to trash these same files from the Hard Drive icon?
"Macintosh HD" should only have four visible folders:
Applications
Library
System
Users
These are described as being at "root level"
All your personal docs should be in the appropriate folder in your User directory, like Pictures, Documents, Music Movies etc
If all your docs are currently at root level you should move them (not copy) to appropriate places in your User directory. Moving should only take seconds (unlike copying) and won't require you to delete the ones you initially put at root level.
You can move them by drag and dropping, or by cmd+C then alt+cmd+V to move them to their new location.
You may be asked for your user password to move stuff off root level.
did what Mike suggested and worked fine. I have 3 icons on my desktop-the icon of Macintosh HD, Lightroom and another photo app. The last two I downloaded from the internet. Are these just "aliases" such that I can drag them to the trash bin to clean up my desk top, without having to worry about altering the underlying files/applications?
One last thing. Now that my files are in the Documents folder is there a way to move or put an alias of the Documents folder on my desk top so I can quickly open it up?

Aliases have little arrows on the icon, or you can right click to bring up the contextual menu list which has "get info" which will say if it an alias, or "show original" for aliases.
You can also create aliases from the contextual menu. Drag the alias to the desktop.

This can happen when copying older files from an older account -- even if it was YOUR account -- from an older Mac to a newer one.
The workaround is to do this:
1. Connect drive, let icon appear on desktop, DON'T do anything else yet
2. Click ONE time on drive to select it, then type "command-i" (eye) to bring up the get info box.
3. Go to "sharing and permissions" area, click lock and enter password, then put a checkmark into "ignore ownership on this volume".
4. Close the get info box, and "copy away"...
The copied files will now "inherit" the permissions of your NEW account on the new Mac.
