Perhaps, but if you're looking at features that only are in Office (or in other words absent in the competition), wouldn't it be normal to expect to pay for them? The subscription option at 9.99 a month or the personal use which is 70 dollars for the year might be a solution. At $150 MSO is steep for personal use. Ironically during my career, Apple Works and Pages filled the bill.![]()

Regardless if its personal use, if you need the features to make your life easier, wouldn't it be worth it?
I have to say give MS Office another look. Its is the gold standard when it comes to Office apps. All the others strive to be like it but none have been able to set themselves apart.
OpenOffice - specifically the Writer component might do the trick.
What version of OSX did you attempt to install it on?Yes I'm back to actively seeking a Pages v4.0 alternative. I just downloaded the latest Libre Office version, had issues installing it and although I got it sorted out through a terminal command, free, you get what you pay for!, crossed my mind, but I'm casual enough I'll never pay for a subscription for such a product.

These free suites seem troublesome to some degree. See my description above of my latest LibreOffice install.
MacOS v10.10.5What version of OSX did you attempt to install it on?
After some comparison, I've decided to go with Nisus Writer Pro as a Pages replacement. So far so good! I've started with a post in a Nisus Thread about text size editing.![]()
If it can't replace Pages 09 then why go with that over the latest version of Pages or LibreOffice Writer? After using Nisus Writer Pro for a year, I'm very happy with it as a Pages replacement for word processing. However, it does not replace the Pages 09 Page Layout feature, and I still find myself going back to Pages 09 for that purpose. I suppose eventually Pages 09 will stop working, so I'm soliciting a replacement for a low cost replacement to fulfill the page layout feature of Pages. Any helpful suggestions appreciated!
Thanks!![]()
I don't like the new Pages. Does LOW have a page layout feature? If it can't replace Pages 09 then why go with that over the latest version of Pages or LibreOffice Writer?
Thanks for pointing at it. I'll check it out. It makes me sad that Apple sees fit to nerf their MacOS software products. I guess their emphasis is on iOS centric?Did you try the development release of Scribus for page layout?

I hope their ROI of iOS will insure us a rock solid macOS for a very long time. Their strategy is a discussion on it's own... I wish their primary target audience would be just a little more like me.I guess their emphasis is on iOS centric?
I think pages is not a serious attempt to be a DTP application. Too many features are missing. For home use layout needs it's o.k., but I wouldn't call it a good DTP program, but an easy one. Maybe that's where the problem is. DTP software needs some special knowledge, like most other pro grade applications do.if you want a good WP program that also is a good DTP program, Pages is by far the best choice.
I have used very many of the Mac word processing and DTP programs in existence.
Conclusion: if you want a good WP program that also is a good DTP program, Pages is by far the best choice.
Word and the various **Office programs do work, but they are a good deal more difficult to use than Pages.
Also, InDesign, iStudio Publisher, iCalamus and all, are excellent DTP programs but, again, are difficult to use as WP programs.
Pages '09 is very good, but the current version has gotten pretty close, at least on Sierra 10.12.6.
Good luck.

Thank you for pointing to iStudio Publisher and iCalamus. I'll try them out, but respectively wait/hope for Affinity Publisher to get released. Did you also try Swift Publisher (more like Pages) and VivaDesigner (more like InDesign)?
Pages (the 09 version) used to be quite competent for my layout purposes and the new version sucks in comparison. Unless I'm not seeing the Inspector, and it's hidden somewhere, they really dumbed it down.
Maybe I just don't understand the latest version of Oage Where is the equivalent of the many paged Inspector window?I have used very many of the Mac word processing and DTP programs in existence.

Have you looked at View>>Inspector
I finally did and it looks like a very sparse, as in nerfed inspector as compared to Page 09...Have you looked at View>>Inspector
The importance of bookmarks to me, is that when working with a long document, I depend on the bookmark window to quickly jump/navigate around the document.

This is good to know! It’s just sad that Pages is less than AppleWorks, and if I’m remembering this correctly, Pages was dumbed down from its initial version, although I’m fuzzy now if the original Pages had bookmarks.I'm not a bookmarks user, but I see that in the latest Pages (version 8.0) bookmarks are supported in addition to a table of contents. Either can be used to navigate the document. Applies to document only, not page layout.
The last great version of Pages (iWork '09, v.4.3) does indeed have bookmarks. When Apple introduced iWork for iOS, they "dumbed down" the OSX version so that there would be operational parity between the two versions. Since then, they've been slowly re-adding those features (and adding new features exclusive to these new versions) but latest version of iWork still does not include all of the past functionality found in iWork '09.This is good to know!
