If we have already updated to 8.1 and we are just waiting for the Mac jailbreak, why would we be locked out if 8.1.1 drops before the jailbreak? Just don't update to 8.1.1...

It's not guaranteed you'll be locked out, however, if something goes wrong on your first attempt to JB..and you have to restore.. you are screwed. You will only be able to restore to 8.1.1. It's best to get it done now and get it working stable.

You won't be locked out if you are already on 8.1 but many people are not. Some have said they are waiting on upgrading to 8.1 until there is a Mac version. I read where someone was doing that yesterday.

Well, that could happen with any jailbreak, lol.

hopefully you informed them that waiting to update was not a good idea...

In all the years that I've been Jailbreaking iPhones and that's been since 2007, I only messed up one time where I had to restore the phone. I also don't install a million things either. I install what I think is most useful and not what looks pretty.

Same here. Never had to restore after jail breaking unless I wanted to update the OS.

If you read all of the jailbreak threads, the likelihood of having to restore usually takes place during the jailbreak process. And once Apple releases 8.1.1 and stops signing 8.1, you will only be able to restore to 8.1.1. Yes, installing bad tweaks can result in your phone crashing.. but you can usually boot into safe mode.

I'm not trying to convince you either way.. at the end of the day, do you.

So if you restore your phone as a backup is the jailbreak gone?

No.
Restore from backup doesn't remove the jb and doesn't effect the iOS version.

im contemplating jailbreaking right now...

so if i want to remove the jailbreak without losing my data what would i do?

what if i back-up my jailbroken phone, then restore as a new phone, then restore as the backup?

Restore the phone with itunes and then restore from backup.

okay cool thanks for the help.

I'm going to use my brother's pc to do the jailbreak, its probably easier and less hassle than doing the whole parallel and windows ordeal.

ill let you guys know if i have any other issues....the last phone i jailbroke was a iPhone 4S with like UltraSnow or BlackRain or something lol

...at some point, all of us hadn't ever done it. ;)

Here we go...

Parallels Trial:
http://trial.parallels.com/?lang=en&terr=us

Windows 8.1 Trial:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-8-1-enterprise

After you get Parallels installed, go from there. If at some point you're having trouble setting it up, PM me and we'll go from there.

I use a Windows computer at work - I'm downloading iTunes and Pangu now. The iTunes library doesn't have to be my home library does it? Cause I will not make this my default library lol.

Not that I'm aware of. I didn't have to change my default library when doing it.

Well now that the Pangu team says the jailbreak could be available in a few days, I'm going to hold off. Hopefully some more tweaks will be updated for iOS 8 by then :)

All good mang. My wife forgot the password to our one and only Windows computer, which I never use. No way any virtual windows machine is going to touch my Mac's limited hard drive space. So, I'm content to wait for a Mac jailbreak. And I'll probably wait to see what happens when others use it first. Hopefully the kinks will all be worked out by then.
