I have my fingers crossed it's just a mobo driver issue, I'm going to check into that in a bit.

If the ssd is toast then I'm out a bit of money and will need to order a new one or just do a standard SSD. It's past the return period.

The slot may be toast or the mobo. If that's the case I'm really not going to be happy.

Right now the drive is in the ultra m.2 slot

Is the motherboard in UEFI mode?

My laptop needs to be in UEFI mode and NVMe drives do not appear in the BIOS.

A lot of bootable disk utilities cannot handle NVMe. I had to clone my SATA M.2 to an NVMe M.2 from within Windows.

Yup. The drive is invisible in uefi I'm flashing the latest firmware for the mobo now.

Edit, flashed successfully.

Boot option #1 reads: uefi built in efi shell
If I click on that it reads that as well or disabled

In storage configuration
M2_1 sata not detected
M2_1 pcie not detected
M2_2 pcie not detected

I think this nvme drive is toast

I think some people are having similar problems with your mobo. Google it.

Someone unplugged the system for a while and it appeared.

I think something like this happened with my Skylake laptop and Thunderbolt NVMe.

Right now I'm going to try to boot Ubuntu and run it live for a bit to maybe get a bit of use and system check.

I'll probably end up getting a sata 6 ssd as a replacement.

Meanwhile I'll look into things more

I would also reload the default BIOS settings.

If I don't go Threadripper I think I will buy the X370 Strix.

Got a live iso of Ubuntu the latest version to try out.

Found my wireless connection no problem but every page returns server not found.

Also noted my keyboard don't seem to register clicks very well, it was like this last night trying to get settings in bios to find the SSD.

I wonder if this board is garbage

For consumer boards, I try to buy ASUS or Gigabyte.

The last one I bought was ASRock and some capacitors had to be replaced after one year but maybe because the really old case lacked proper cooling. Although some people had trouble with the specified 220W support (I am only using 125W).

Even then, one of the ASUS AM4 motherboards had some teething problems at the start.

Tried a wired connection and same thing.

Went back into the bios and did an internet update and to my surprise it connected to ASRock servers and checked and said I was up to date.

Still can't find my SSD drive however

Sometimes, an M.2 slot will be shared with some other connection, so only one can be used. This also happens among PCIe slots.

Check the manual.

So....

Rookie mistake...

I unplugged everything set the tower down, pulled out my fine tipped screwdriver and loosened the SSD and very carefully applied a bit more pressure to it farther into the slot and I heard a click.

So yup

The blasted thing was not seated in all the way

I plugged everything back in powered up and was told something about needing proper media or something, it didn't go to the bios like it was so I had to reboot and f2 and low and behold the SSD is now listed

Now still for some reason Ubuntu 17.04 still refused to connect to the internet even though it's wired and shows connected

I was going to suggest reseating the SSD, but I thought if the M.2 is screwed in, it must be good.

Did you put in in the 3.0 slot?

I downgraded to Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS instead of 17.04 and that seems to do the trick. I can access the web now. Must have been a driver issue in the new software.

I am thinking about dual booting

Got my 3tb drive installed and formatted. Also came across an LG BD re-writer so I shoved that drive in also. Might as well, I had it laying around from my previous build.

So far windows 10 don't seem that bad, to me its easier to work with then my MBP ever was. Windows 10 on a desk top is way better (IMHO) then tablets or laptops. However, there does seem to be some tools missing on windows like movie maker. It kind of sucks Ill need to find other software if I want to watch DVDs or blu-rays on the thing.

I think I can finally start gathering up the software that I want to run on this thing

Thought I would do a bit of an update to this thread to share my thoughts and experiences.

I have just installed the windows creators update (no idea what it is really) and I am surprised it actually updated fine. I am using Chrome since it syncs devices and such. Edge is okay too but I actually closed it out because it looks like it broke adguard (maybe I just needed to close out the windows and start again, not sure, will try later).

I have noticed (and this is since I first started using the PC) every so often I will see an spinning circle near the mouse pointer, it may be chrome related. It last a few seconds and don't normally cause an issue but it, to me, should not really be happening. I am not sure if its because page updates are happening in the background while I am doing something else or what.

Also just noticed on the twitter web page, clicking anywhere will highlight something, usually a letter but sometimes an icon or image. Its really odd. Once again could be chrome related.

I uploaded my images (raw files from a 5DmkII) from the eclipse to my computer onto my 3tb drive and was surprised that I could view them without DPP or lightroom or something, but it took a few moments to bring up the full sized preview. But they are pretty big files off a 7200rpm drive.

I don't use my PC for a week and I need to replace the batteries in my keyboard (its a cheapo for sure and probably not a windows problem).

Now, this is new software running on new hardware and architecture (zen) so there are some growing pains I'm sure.

The question is, mostly before I open lightroom and use this PC as my photo editing rig, do I trust my photos to this thing? I am thinking it is kind of not good to be having these thoughts with a new build. Lightroom don't cost a massive fortune (still pricey) and my storage drive would be easy to remove if need be.

Thoughts?

Hmmm... closed chrome and have not seen the spinning circle next to the mouse pointer?
Also deleted adguard and installed adblock and seems to have done the trick. May reinstall adguard. I am thinking windows update kind of borked a couple things.

After this last update that I was forced to take (update and restart or update and shutdown) I am becoming extremely unhappy with this system.

There is almost an update every time I turn the thing on or try to shut it down) Edge is being strange, taking at least a couple minutes before it will load a web page, or what not, its like it is hanging or something. Updates break something with the extensions, it keeps turning off my ad blocker or breaking it. Last time I had to uninstall and find a new one, now looks like I need to do it again.

I have a new copy of Adobe lightroom 6 I haven't even opened yet to install. I don't think I trust this PC (at least windows) for my photography which is one of the reasons I built it.

I am getting tempted to buy another SSD to install Ubuntu on and dual boot things for a bit, possibly just eat the cost of windows 10 and just format my main drive with a Linux distro.

MBP or iMac for serious work? Suggestions?

Why Ubuntu? There is other nice distributions like openSUSE or Mageia

also Win 10 is very stable and predictable if you know how to use

Because I have an iso on a thumb drive already. It doesn't have to be Ubuntu, it is a popular distro.

I guess I need to use Windows a bit more to understand it and how it operates.

Someone suggested using a VM inside windows to use Linux and it would work.

Do you have Win 10 Pro or Home? IMHO Home is sufficient and costs half amount of money
Try Chromium it's better than Chrome

for stability test Luxmark and 3DMark Time Spy Stress Test
also XTU or OCCT
