Now my iPhone 6 just started to do this this morning. I haven't downloaded a new app in weeks, and haven't changed anything else also.

This happens when an app you have installed uses its own VPN to connect to a server. This is separate from the ones you'd see listed in settings. For example, "Akinator the Genie" requires this for its servers. If you have that app installed you'd have to enter or change your password periodically.

Is this new?
I don't remember having this under 8.x and I haven't added any new apps under 9.x excluding Apple ones that came with iOS9.

Seems is probably a bug as its supposed to do that when you have not unlocked your device for 48 hrs, Apple KB. Looks like that particular function must have some buggy code. (Also been happening since 7.1.1 at least.)

Saw this infrequently on iOS8.x as a result of the middle of the night springboard crashes.
Looking back at D&U and not seeing any correlation there.

Isn't the message different for 48hrs vs. a Restart?

Phone reboot says 'needs passcode to enable TouchID' or whatever. No mention of the 48 hours. But some mentioned that this 48 hours message was from springboard restarts. Don't know if that was verified.

I have started getting this 48h issue too. And another one it is asking me to sign in to my appleId when i activate the screen or asking my password in appstore. And this is happening few times a day!

Ios9.1 / 6s+

So all of these comments are from the 48 hours version, right? I just got another 'password to enable TouchID' which is like after a reboot but it didn't use the word reboot. Hm...Feedback submitted.

So far these "inopportune" or "unexpected" events have all centered around the "48 hours" request AFAIK.

I woke up to this. And no, I didn't sleep two whole days without knowing and I did use my phone last night! Anyone else ever seen this happen or know what causes it?

It's not a huge deal; it's not like entering my passcode is a major hassle, but I just wonder if it's something I did since it's never happened before.
Mine ask me if i wanted it to keep asking for pw, I checked no. Went to download first app, a box pops up and says make your selection and click download in 15 seconds you wouldn't have to sign in. Well it keep on asking for every other app. Today I updated to 9.1 took care of the problem I had. I just downloaded adobe reader and it didn't ask for password. Hope it last like that, now its to get music to play with double tapping home key and swiping up pages I viewed early.
