I'm confused...how does this help the OP?

Nowhere did the OP say he was using a password manager, nor did he say he was using a document. The OP created a password protected image file from a folder. It could have been a folder containing photos, videos, tax documents, a work project, etc. Can't put those in a Pages document.
While I failed to make myself clear, I was suggesting the OP use a password manager to store important passwords, usernames, and even important attachments (where applicable). And a Pages document can do text, tax documents and even videos. Granted, it wouldn't be the ideal solution for a one size fits all but, it would make it a lot easier for the OP to access and amend as needed using one or both of both suggestions. I hope that clears your confusion. If not, I am not going to get into a debate over it.

Okay, installed and ran Disk Warrior on the external HD. It tells me this:

DiskWarrior scanned the disk named "1 Seagante Mac HD Clone" checking all files and folders for damage and potential compatibility problems.

• Permissions were verified and any necessary repairs were made.

• 6,341 Files had property list data checked.

• 16,143 Files had resource data checked.

• The maximum folder depth on this disk is 21. This does not exceed the maximum recommended depth.

• The system symbolic link files were checked and no problems were found.

• 7 Files had property list data that was found to be damaged.

• 14 Files had resource data that was found to be damaged.
