iPod Pathetic Nano Update: Do you think there will more more storage in the future or end of the line?

I don't usually make a thread to vent, but I was so excited for an updated iPod Nano. Either 32GB or a cheaper price. ALL they did was update the colors (with an admittedly nice Space Gray), but they left it at $150 for 16GB.

I am utterly disgusted. Do you thing there will ever be more storage added or will this be the end of the line? Speculation, I know.

I'm thinking of paying $70 to get a refurb 5th gen Nano from Apple. I get to keep the click wheel and have the same amount of storage as the $150 "new" version.

Wasn't surprised. Apple seems to have a fetish for having 16GB as the base model for iDevices for some reason. With 16GB, it makes no sense to get the nano. $50 more essentially gets you an 4" iPhone 6 without LTE with the A8 chip and 8MP camera.

But iOS devices make poor music devices in my opinion. I have an iPhone 6 but you have to always look at the screen to adjust music, it's always alerting me to something, and it drains the battery. I wanted a music only device with physical buttons to control playback.

If you want buttons then why are you looking at the Nano? It has been touch screen only for quite a while. If the Nano is acceptable, you might consider the iPod Touch and simply turn everything off and don't use anything but the music app. It won't get Classic levels of battery life but it could get close and it will be miles faster.

The Nano has buttons on the side for volume, play, pause, skip, rewinding, etc. You can use it without looking

While I don't think this is the end of the road for the iPod Nano nor the iPod Shuffle, I would say the next time the iPod touch is updated, both of those will receive either a price cut or a storage increase (or both). What really gets to me is the iOS 6-style operating system from the iPod Nano. It looks way too dated for 2015. Also, at $149, the iPod Nano is a rip-off. The iPod touch 6th generation, however, is a steal!

I'm not too disappointed. I purchased a 7th Gen Nano and returned it after a week. Not downgrading the product, but I found it to be lackluster for the price in comparison to the Touch.

I could be naive but I have no idea why anyone would buy this when for just a bit more you can get a 5th Gen Touch with a full blown OS, WiFi, etc.

I suppose for it's size? I understand it could make a solid media player for someone that it is into sports and the like but I don't have any idea why the average user would hang on to this.

Agree, they should update the UI, maybe even put a retina version of the display in there.

The touch is significantly larger and more cumbersome to use depending on what you're doing. It has no physical buttons to control music playback so to do anything on it you have to get it out and look at it's screen. Also, iOS is lackluster for music in my opinion. It has an overly complicated Music app, is constantly alerting you to a notification (which interrupts your music), and runs out of battery pretty fast.

The buttons is not something that I have considered, that's a good point, I can see the appeal in that. I don't think that the Music app is that complicated, even with the recent updates. I think you can only just now say that it is lacking - before recently it was very clean and minimal.

You can turn notifications and wifi off, which I typically do, and it trumps the nano in terms of battery life so I disagree there.

This isn't the point of your thread though, but I suppose I did gain some insight regarding the buttons. I did own the current Nano for a short time and forgot about them. I still found myself controlling it from the screen most of the time anyway, I found the button combinations to not always work properly. I also found the battery life to be pretty bad compared to what I was used to in a portable media player, but I guess that is to be expected due to its size.

Oh, I didn't look at your signature. If I may ask, what do you use your iPhone for since you use your iPod Touch for media? I personally had both and kept them separate, but there are many on this forum who couldn't' conceive having both.

Taking photos and videos, and you know, all the other smartphone stuff. See, I was okay with using my iPhone 2G for music, because we didn't have apps, the camera was subpar, and you couldn't even do video. And when the apps came out, it still wasn't something that dented into it. So when I was coming up with money to buy the iPhone 4, I sold my iPod Video not thinking too much, and just that I was getting $50 to put towards the $199 16 GB iPhone, and that was when the App Store really started to get interesting and Instagram, Camera+, iMovie, etc debuted.

Then I started racking up 3 GB of photos every month, along with videos, quickly realizing that my music wasn't going to work with all that.

Right now I have 20 GB worth of photos and video on my phone. At least two of those videos are 3 GB. And this is the 64 GB model of the 5S.

I like not having to think too much. Don't worry about OS updates taking space, don't worry about running out of room when taking a video, don't have to constantly figure out which photos I can delete, don't have to rely on automatic backups like OneDrive/Google Drive, and when I want to listen to music, I don't have to deal with notifications going off or worry about the battery.

And it was only $70 on AT&T Next. I think they were going to give me the 16 GB for $25, and I was like, wait... How much is the 64 GB then? ONLY $70? Yeah, give me that instead, thanks.

$70 was a steal! I used to fill my iPhone up with music and mainly 30+ GB of TV shows. Lately however, I just have apps and music on it. Like you said, it's nice not to have worry about always switching stuff out and running out of space to offload stuff. I've started to use my iPhone as just a smartphone and not necessarily a music player.

With an iPhone 6, I don't really want to carry around an iPod Touch sized media device, which is why I would have even bought a 128GB Nano. Like you said in another thread, I don't mind the 2" screen for video once you get used to it.

I wish I'd bought a Classic when I had the chance. :/ Aw well. I may try the Ecout app and try my phone as a media player again and use an old Nano for music.

One of the biggest headaches of using your phone as a media device is that watching videos and listening to music can run the battery down pretty fast which is inconvenient if you'll be out for the day.

According to Gruber, there's nobody left on the iPod software team, they've all been moved to Apple Watch development. No software updates probably means no hardware updates.

Sorry, I know how it feels to be abandoned by Apple (at least I did until they released the 6th gen touch. Whew!).

128GB iPhone, Do Not Disturb mode, headphones with volume controls (or a headphone extender with controls on), and an external battery pack are probably the best music experience you'll get from Apple nowadays.

64GB iPhone is OK now iCloud Photo Library is out and that manages what Photos to store full resolution for me.

It never ceases to amaze me how so many people don't see the value in the differences between the iPod Touch and the iPod Nano. Oh, and the iOS music app has progressively gone downhill since iOS 7.x.

As for the future of the Nano. I believe this is it. I don't expect there to be any changes for the remainder of its product life. I too would've preferred a price drop and/or capacity increase. I wasn't expecting anything to change which is why I went out and bought a Nano 2 months ago.

I'm still debating about the new Touch. Having 1 GB is a problem IMO, but I DID give my daughter my iPhone 4 (that I was using as an iPod Touch) because her 5c died from water damage, so I guess I can treat myself for being a "good dad". LOL

It should be illegal to own as many devices as I do. Yes, I have a smartphone, Sharp Aquos Crystal. It has a beautiful 5" bezel-less screen so naturally have a few movies and short videos loaded on it to demo the capabilities. And a few albums to showcase the Harmon Kardon audio. But generally speaking, I don't use my phone for daily media playback.

That iPhone 4 was my daily phone (prior to getting the Aquos). That was when I relegated the iP4 to iPod status.

I'm embarrassed to say this with the all flack I've been giving the current Nano, but I'm considering picking one up now (waiting for a Best Buy sale most likely). I have been using my old Nano a lot the past few days and noticed some things. I have many larger albums now than I did with my Nano in the past (100+ song albums). I actually find myself wishing for the fast inertia scrolling I've become accustomed to. Also, I was using it in bed as a sleep aid and wanted to lower the volume. I felt around for it and then I had to find the click wheel to scroll it. I started thinking that I wouldn't mind actual volume buttons like the 7th gen has.

That, plus the 5 hours additional battery life of the new one and the fact that I have kind of come to your realization: "As for the future of the Nano. I believe this is it." My dream would be a 32GB model, but I really think this is it for the iPods (barring the touch). If I find a good deal I may jump on it.

I actually like the combination of button and touch over the click wheel. I never found the clickwheel to be reliably accurate for me. It seemed to skip and jump around. Maybe something to do with the electrical conductivity of my fingers vs. others... as my kids never had a problem with the clickwheel (on the same device).

I like the ease and speed of scrolling down a list to select a playlist, album, or track. Much quicker and more precise than the clickwheel. The buttons for volume and playback are easier to identify and navigate by feel. I have an Incipio case for it with a clip, but the case covers the buttons and until the cover loosens up, the buttons are a bit stiff to press.

My dream would be a 32GB model, but I really think this is it for the iPods (barring the touch). If I find a good deal I may jump on it.

If you are creative with smart playlists you can get a good mix of music even with the 16GB. My music library is many times larger than even the 128GB Touch could hold so I've had to deal with playlists for managing music for a long time.

I rarely see the Nanos go on sale. I ended up getting one at Costco for $139. If you plan on watching videos on it, I recommend considering the space grey because it is the only model with a black bezel. I find a black bezel better for watching videos than the white. (very noticeable when comparing my iPad 1 w/black, iPad 2 w/white, and iPad 4 w/black). Looks like if I get a new Touch, it'll be space grey too, for the same reason.

Thanks for the feedback. I also wanted to ask, in your opinion, how durable is it? Have the buttons held up for you? Is it prone to scuffs? I don't really want to put a case on it since it will mostly be around the house use. Is the Incipio case hard to get on and off? I would probable pick on of those up for exercising.

EDIT: also, since it has no speaker does that mean it won't "play" music with no headphones in it? I've had iPods accidentally start playing with no headphones in them and run the battery down.

I love smart playlists. I'm in the process of going through my entire library (2,550 songs which is small compared to yours ) and weeding out the duds, re-rating them, and just updating everything. I've gone from 6 sloppy playlists to 19 with 8 smart playlists to really help organize things. Plus, I tend to listen to the same set of songs so I made some smart playlists to help bring up old songs I haven't listened to for weeks.
