What about the fact that Mountain Lion and all app updates are now contained in the Mac App Store. Won't his friend need to have his Apple account name and password every time there is a software update? Or will the system just update like it works now but just inside the app store?

I wonder if the command-line softwareupdate tool works. I have the GM installed but don't have any updates to install so I can't check.

Code:
sudo softwareupdate -i -a

what does that command do? force updates back to the update tool and out of the app store?

While OS and non-MAS updates appear in the MAS interface, they don't need a logged in AppleID to be downloaded and installed. They're pretty much exactly the same as the old Software Update method, just in a different place.

Well that's the big question. In previous versions of OS X you've been able to check for updates, download, and install them using that command. So I'm wondering if it does what you described in Mountain Lion.

The softwareupdate cli tool appears to still work. Updates are still distributed the same way as they always were, it's just that the app managing the updates is now the app store app, rather than the Software Update app.
