If the numbers and profits are anything to go by, they’re not doing too bad with marketing ;)

I think that is a red herring.

It sells well without marketing, but yeah I was referring to the gaming market. Like you said, how many people know of it as a gaming machine? And your 6 year old game is not going to be sufficient. They need to have 0-day releases with all the other platforms and be able to run 4K reasonably. Feature by feature, they need to be competitive and supported by those game devs, and not solely based on benchmark/spec tools

The biggest Achilles heal today that Apple has is they seem to be uninterested in this facet of PCs. I would love to ditch my PC to play Flight Sim 2020 or Squadron with HOTA / native support and have just one computer in the apartment

This is very true. I work and study in computational social science/natural language processing.

All of the real work is usually done on Mac (locally) or Linux (locally or distributed computing).

Most people I know who work in actual computer science or adjacent fields (not IT) have a virulent hatred for Windows. I'd say most are on Linux, but Mac is probably the second most common platform. There's also a not insignificant portion with Linux on their Mac, lol.

People don't seem to understand that computers are used for more than making pop songs and Youtube videos.

I made a simplified natural selection simulator years ago. It made my then powerful quad core MBP chug.

Obviously to attract the PC gaming crowd, they would need to be able to run the latest AAA games, and run them well.

I used that as an example purely because it’s what I happened to be playing at the time. And partly because using a beta Parallels, virtualising a beta ARM Windows which is emulating x86, on a low power ARM system. I was a bit surprised it performed as well as it did.

We’ve all seen, or tried, the benchmarks in modern games. We know the M1 can’t cope as well as it would need to. But for what it is, it shows promise. It gives me hope that with the desktop systems, more processor and GPU cores, they’ll actually be pretty capable systems.

It's a bit outside of what I personally research/work on, but that type of thing tends to be handled in a distributed environment (i.e. cloud computing) from what I know. It would indeed make a laptop crawl on its knees!

Since I primarily work with text/linguistic data, I hardly ever run into processing power issues unless I'm working with extremely large corpora (billions of words).

Just think about what you’re saying. “In a few years....”. You do realize in a few years Apple will be even further on top of their game in their processors right? Let’s not forget that Apple has had years of experience making their own processors with the iPhone and iPad. Your post sounds like you don’t want Apple to win. Kinda bizarre.
My point is that this is good for everyone. Nobody stays on top forever, but the M1 is great for computing in general. And you're incorrect, I want Apple to win. I also want Microsoft to win. If companies do well then we all have more choice and better options. That does tend to make me critical of things though.

I love the Mac/PC guy AD where the Vista "person" keeps repeating the same phrase and Hodgman asks if anyone can reset him/pull the power

lmfao

I miss a lot about Steve Jobs and that era of Apple.
There was a confidence and braggadocious nature and ego that was honestly a lot of fun.

Interesting. Does it cause slowdowns, crashes? Because of the computing limitations, I had to keep the number of generations relatively small.

Wow.. your signature. Are you a caricature or being totally serious? Does this stuff mean that much to you?
Do you really think my signature depicts a caricature? People who are blindly defending only one brand and blindly trash another are caricatures/religious fanatics to me. Even on an Apple centric forum. Tribal behaviour like that belongs on a soccer field and not on a computer forum.

Maybe read my signature carefully again and than you see I mean quite the opposite of what you suggest.

My favorite ones are the Choose a Vista and when the PC is obese full of trial software. Fantastic ads and so very true.

Still many are like that, that is how they can get big discounts...not as bad as it was before, but depending on which system you go with you might end up with lots of bloat ware...

I am brand new to Mac... I wish I had seen the light a few years ago....even during this time Windows has never been my main system - Red Hat, then Fedora....most recently Ubuntu...

You live in the past. Maybe you should find some more recent examples to support your unfounded tribal feelings.
The video is about Mac vs. PC in the nostalgic days. You're offended over my comment about a video over 10 years ago? Super Weird. Calm down. And BTW I don't owe you any supporting info. Deal with it. What a silly thing to say. ?

I'm with you about that. Most people that have Windows machines that care about their computing tend to dump Windows in favor of some type of Linux Distro.

I know they are from the nostalgic days. That is why I wonder if you can't come up with anything more recent. BTW I never said you owe me something and I never said I was upset. Those are all your unfounded conclusions. But you still are on a forum and there are people who can disagree with you if you are painting with such broad strokes. Disagreeing with you is not silly (emoticons with roll-eyes on the other hand....), just deal with it.

Yes? The fact that you unironically state "I am not religious/emotional about any of them. They are just tools to me" in your signature is HILARIOUS to me considering it relays the total opposite effect: that you take this crap way too seriously.

Oh dear, what has happened in this thread? Diplomacy and decorum, please.

Happy new year, everyone.
One person got bent out of shape over a comment made about a video over 10 years ago. LOL. People don't respect others opinions so they get into childish fits throwing their political views which is nonsense. The video was spot on about the Mac Vs. PC and it was relevant to the thread content.

Amen brother ? God forbid people have different opinions about things, and worse, verbalise them on a forum where there could be people with entirely different thoughts and feelings to those.

Do what you like, buy what you like, use what you like and don't give a damn if anyone else agrees with you. Let others do the exact same as you, let them do, buy and use whatever suits them.

The true road to happiness is to just not give a **** about silly things that don't matter. Embrace your differences, they are what keep life interesting, and dear god I'm in danger of getting philosophical and spiritually enlightened. Ok that's enough morphine for me today I think ??

Thanks for the explanation.

On the Windows/Mac note - In a way I feel fortunate that I get to use both. I mainly use Windows for work and a Mac for personal use and some work. I used to prefer using Office on Windows but I think since Office 2019, a lot of it is similar to the Windows version I’ve been used to.

Let's be real, if Apple did this today MR would spew nothing but vitrol over it.

I'm with you about that. Most people that have Windows machines that care about their computing tend to dump Windows in favor of some type of Linux Distro.
That and then the distro wars start. Then in another 3 years they'll switch distros.
