Unless you fill all the slots, just leave the 32Gb RAM in the machine. They do not have to be all the same capacity.
Are you sure? OWC’s website states that all LRDIMM modules need to be the same size, although personally I don’t see why you can’t mix sizes, as long as the channel pairs are the same size.

hmm wow didn't notice that. At least for the RDIMM (below 64gb sticks) they don't have that disclaimer.

I don’t think it’s correct, Apple’s own website shows the proper configurations for mixed sizes. Unless, Apple’s memory is RDIMM and this same-size requirement is only for OWC’s LRDIMM?

it can’t hurt to install all of it and then boot it up. The system profiler will alert with a diagram of how to correctly install the modules if anything’s incompatible or in the wrong slot.

May I ask why?

For internal audio, Apple already uses excellent DACs for their headphone ports, and if you need anything more high end, keeping it internal is often considered less than ideal for audio since it's inside a box with a lot of other interference, so external sound devices are typically preferred. What do you want from the device and for what use-case?

Also, note that Sazzy on YouTube did a video about PCIe cards and showed that at least one SoundBlaster card didn't work in macOS.

I tried tossing in an old sound blaster just to see if I could get an optical out. As expected it did not work. I can go look at the exact model if anyone cares but they haven’t made drivers for macOS for years so I wouldn’t expect them to function.

They haven't made Mac drivers for their PCI cards, no. There's no market for it. They do have some drivers for their external DACs/ADCs though, such as the X7. I have one connected to my MacBook Pro (running Catalina) along with the SB drivers and utilities. It works wonderfully.

My gut tells me that for non-OEM audio on the new Pro, we're going to be stuck using USB.

consumer level non-OEM, yes.

that reminds me that I have a USB audio interface around here with an optical out, I’ll figure out which tote I put it in and try it for those who want optical, it’s one of those cheap Behringer units I think. I have the CalDigit dock so I’ll try that too sometime soon.

Just put a TOSLINK cable on the optical out of my CalDigit TS3 Plus dock connected to my mMP 7,1. Nothing has shown up in Sound settings though, seems to not recognize it.

edit to add: in case it wasn't clear I have it connected on both ends, one to the dock and the other to an audio device that accepts optical in.

The minute the CalDigit is connected to the Mac, the latter should see the dock as both a valid input and output. Regardless of whether there's something connected to the TOSLink port. So if the Mac isn't seeing it at all, then your dock or the connection is having an issue.

I have it connected via thunderbolt cable to the top ports. I have another thunderbolt device on the pass through now just to validate it is connected and that shows up. Not sure why it’s not working then.

Call up the MIDI application and snag a screen shot for me?

Just my screens, headset, the internal speaker, and NoMachine's (VNC tool) virtual audio devices...

How much of a hit do you think there is going from a direct USB connection to the Mac Pro vs. USB > TB3 Adapter > Mac Pro?

MP7,1 16 core, 96GB, 2TB, Vega II. Most of this migrating from elsewhere:

BlackMagic Decklink MiniMonitor 4k (calibrated BenQ display)
Universal Audio UAD-2 DSP card (DAW plugs)
OWC Accelsior 4M2 (fanless) w/ 4 x 512GB Samsung 970 EVO+ RAID 0 (Resolve & FCPX Cache /optimised media)

Thunderbolt: OWC Thunderbay 6 (4x2TB SSDs RAID 5, 1x 4TB SSD Timemachine; 1x512GB m.2 Alt Boot disk); RME UFX+ audio interface.

13 port USB 2.0 hub; 7 port USB 3.0 hub.

so small I wouldn't worry about it, approaching zero I would think.

OK. Something is definitely going on with your dock and your Mac. Dumb question: do you have your dock powered?

Yeah, it was powered but the dock had some how glitched. The light was on on the dock, pass through TB3 was working, the behavior I was seeing survived a reboot of the Mac Pro, finally decided to reboot the dock (pull power and plug back in) and it came up. Something must have hung internally but it's there now.

Can confirm the optical out is working on the CalDigit TS3 Plus but it appears to be downmixed to stereo. I haven't had a chance to go find the USB audio adapter I have around here yet but will test that soon too.

OK good. I have 3 of those CalDigits and they're.... ornery. Heat seems to be one of their enemies and they get fookin' hot, too. A regular power cycle seems to help unwedge them.

The TOSlink is only stereo, yes. You won't get 5.1/7.1 without a something like a Sound Blaster, et al.

Were you able to order the OWC Accelsior without any OWC drives? I can't find a way to do so.

This is the ONLY place I’ve seen listed. No idea if it’s the MP5,1 model or MP7,1 model or what their blade compatibility chart officially states because none has been published. For those reasons AND the x8 limitation, I would not recommend the product.

I'm thinking of getting the OWC ACCELSIOR 4M2 8TB version https://www.owcdigital.com/products/accelsior-4m2

Is this card bootable? Can I do bootcamp on it?
In its stock format from OWC this unit will not be bootable as it's a RAID-0 formatted device. The only way to make it bootable is to reformat it as JBOD (4 separate blades). Then setup one of the JBODs(blade) as APFS and install or clone your boot image to it. The other three JBODs(blades) can then be setup as a 3x Blade RAID-0.

Thus is you were to buy the 4TB OWC device you would have

1) A 1TB bootable blade formatted as APFS.
2) Three blades formatted as 3TB RAID-0.
