Oh excuse me, I thought my unlimited data plan actually meant what it sounded like it was supposed to mean...

Considering the very act of tethering the device violates your agreement for unlimited data might be the reason

I personally don't care what you do with your plan but before you make statements like that be sure you read more in what you agree to when you sign up for a service.

AT&T doesn't know jack about iPhone tethering limits...

Yes, and AT&T can kiss my black arse... till then, I'm still using bittorrent to download tons of apps/movies *cough* *cough* I mean I'm download GB's of Linux distros...

I love PDANet - every version gets better and better. Only thing I don't like about the most recent version is that you have to go to a sub-menu in order to enable the router, rather than doing it from the primary screen. I emailed them and they said they're looking into putting it back on the primary screen, but that they gave it its own screen as you can now switch between USB and wifi. I think they could put that on the front page still... that's just me though :). Great app!

Ya know to be honest, i WOULD pay an extra $30/month or so to get official tethering on my iPhone, but ATT won't let me. As soon as they make that option available, i really won't have any use for jailbreaking my iphone anymore. Well, I'll need it for the unlock... But the only real reason i need the unlock is to increase the eventual eBay value of my phone :D

i read on pdanets website, the wifi adhoc tethering option has a bug where your phone will show charging, but in reality it is discharging. was this resolved when using usb to tether?

Yes, it's rather a bug with the iPhone. It cannot charge while using wifi and 3G at the same time. But using the USB makes it charge at the same time

I'm interested to know if network providers can tell whether you are surfing using your iphone when you're tethered to your laptop. As we know there is some talk that the providers (AT&Tin US, 02 in UK) want to charge extra for tethered usage, despite the fact that we've been able to use mobile phones as modems for many years now.
I've done a bit of research and have discovered that there is a system called Network Access Indentification (NAI) which allegedly identifies such usage, but is switchable in the mobile device. For windows mobiles i found a post which loosely describes how to change the settings in the registry to achieve anonymity:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\WModem]
"Multi-NAI"=dword:00000000

But this is for windows mobiles.

Does anyone know if iPhones snitch back to their providers when we use PDANet or Netshare, and if they do whether we can switch off the NAI in the relevant .plist and if so how?

That's not true. There is/was a firmware bug that would show that your phone was charging though it was actually discharging. I don't know if they've completely fixed it, but my iPhone charges fine while using WiFi+3G and other people have reported the same thing.

Known Issues:

Battery won't charge when using PdaNet - this has been identified as a firmware bug in the iPhone OS that seems to be triggered by ad-hoc Wifi usages such as OpenSSH or PdaNet. The battery indicator will still show a charging state even though battery is being discharged. It does not always happen and you can try to reboot the iPhone and see if the issue goes away. In our future builds we will see if there is a way to work around this issue, or hopefully it will be fixed in future OS updates.

You sure? Because last I checked people were still having problems, since the overheating failsafe got triggered from the heat.

finally upgraded to PDAnet 1.51 and used the USB tether, worked great!!!! A lot more friendly on the battery too

I've never heard of any sort of overheating failsafe. Do you have any citations?

I tether quite often since before version 1.40 and I've never really had any problems. Back then, sometimes it would discharge while I kept it connected but I solved that by replugging the cable when there was a "-" by the battery percentage. It doesn't happen anymore, though.

Well I am talking all forms of tethering, I myself didn't try PdaNet before but even with terminal my phone would stop get REALLY hot (almost to the point where you could burn yourself) and then stop charging. This while tethering via Wifi and doing network intensive tasks.

The phone itself has a heat sensor and will shutdown if it detects to much heat. Tethering via wifi generates a lot of heat when transferring significant data. Via the USB cable is much better but unfortunately this solution is not available for OSX yet.

The next best solution would be to use an external device to keep the phone cool. I had a situation not to long ago where I had to download about 350 megs for work and had no wifi. So I set the phone on the A/C vent and it countered the heat. You could also use a little fan to blow on the phone. I know it may sound silly but it works. Hopefully the USB for Mac will be here soon.

This is the worst post I have seen on this forum. Nice work moran! Everyone welcome the AT&T data usage police to the forum!!

Except for the part where he said he didn't care what you did with your plan but was simply pointing out that it is against the ToS and could have repercussions if AT&T does catch you.

So, back to my question of a few posts ago, can we alter the settings on iPhone to change the NAI and hence make tethering invisible to AT& T and O2 back here in the UK?
The AT&T police wouldn't like it, but what the.......!

The chances are that when tethering, your laptop will access ports that the iPhone would never access by itself (Torrenting, Program Updates, etc.) so they would just find you that way.

It doesn't really matter - IIRC, O2s T&Cs state that they will warn you then disconnect your data access, so you won't get charged for it and you can always phone them up if it happens and claim it was a mistake etc.

A better question would be: Does Windows 7 work with PdaNet?

No it does not work Windows 7, at least it did not work for me. Installed fine and so did iTunes but it could not link with the phone properly. This is a real shame cause Windows 7 is fantastic. I even rate it higher then XP, which is a lot for me to say.
