I disagree, I think you will be able to load other ePub files much in the same way you can load other MP3 files that you bought from Amazon, for example, or ripped on from a CD. We're just waiting on the new version of iTunes, released when the iPad is released, to recognize ePub files as a library item.

You were right!

What chance does the forum think of getting PDF's on there too?

Anyone know of Mac software/freeware to convert files to ePub?

I'm hoping there'll be a decent iPad optimized ebook app supporting PDF on launch day or soon thereafter. Either pre-installed on the iPad or available through the App Store. I have a collection of work-related technical ebooks and other documents in PDF format I'll want to transfer to my iPad as is without conversion. I've tried converting a couple PDF ebooks to ePub format with Callibre and didn't like what it did to the formatting, so for now I plan on keeping everything in PDF. Hopefully the ipad optimized Goodreader will be available in the App Store come April 3rd.

I have a question related to this topic. In my daily job, it's very common to read a lot of scientific papers (papers each of which is about 8 pages in length). I'd love not to have to print them all but to read them, e.g., on the iPad. BUT what I'd really need would be a possibility to mark text passages and to add comments. That is, I'd need something like an Adobe Acrobat Pro application and an input pen. So I could work with my papers just like they were on physical paper.

Did anyone hear of some company going to release such a thing for the iPad (i.e. app + pen)?

Thanks!

Thank you very much! This looks very promising indeed.
And I found a candidate for a stylus:

Does anyone know this thing already? Is it exact enough for writing (e.g. math formulas)? It has this ball rather than a tip, so I'm not sure if this is working...?

We talked about this yesterday in some thread... i thought it was this one - wait, the handwriting one!

It works well, i've found that it really depends on the app as to the quality of the writing results. The sketch app i have looks better with the pogo over my finger, but the writing is wayyyyy smoother and better in Fast Finga.

The only complaint might be the "heft" for long term writing. It's small in diameter, and i'd be more than happy to purchase a fatter one for more writing use.

I thought i had a screen shot from fast finga handy to upload, i'll find it or do another one and show how well it looks later!

Every iPad/touch/iPhone stylus will have a big fat tip. Accuracy is only a little better than using your finger. This is just the way capacitive screens work. You are not going to get they sharp point accuracy of using a resistive screen.

Yes and no..... here are some screen shots using it.

One is while writing, hence a fatter, then the other is the note created in FastFinga.

Hm, you're FastFinger writing really looks good. It's clear that its not as exact as writing on paper but the writing is well readable and I think it could suffice for some comments, including short formulas.
@Bytor65: Thanks for this info! So I probably will just try the pogo. Have to wait for a month more anyway, living in Germany...

Viewing PDFs on the Ipad

What will the ideal way to view pdf's on the iPad? Currently I use Air Sharing on the iPhone. I haven't heard of an iPad version of Air Sharing.

Are you familiar with any pdf viewer for the iPad?

Have you bothered to view the iPad spec page? Most iPhone apps work in the iPad too. The iPad displays PDFs natively. Also there are tons of other apps that will display PDFs on the iPad, including Pages.

Im sure the iPhone version of the app will do the same thing. Why do people keep missing this?

I wonder if Pages will allow you to open pdf files? Or just .pages files.

I would like to convert PDF files to eBook format. Amazon has this as a Kindle feature. You e-mail the PDF to amazon and the eBook comes back in a few minutes.

I use it to store product manuals. Very useful feature.

Air Sharing

I use Air Sharing on my iPhone but using the iPhone version on the iPad just doesn't give acceptable results. It displays the pdf's in iPhone size and if you hit the 2X button, it blows it up to fill the screen but it's pixelated and the pdf's are practically unreadable. I do see that Air Sharing now has an iPad specific version for $10.

If anyone has an idea of how I can get my pdf magazines on my iPad (for free - c'mon...I just spent almost $700 for my new toy & accessories and I'm broke :p) I would REALLY appreciate it.

Thanks all! :)

Google Docs to View PDF's

Assuming you have a network connection, you can store all your PDF's in Google Docs and view them on the ipad thru Safari. You get a nice full screen view and all the doc types that docs supports, of course. Not good for offline viewing or making annotations, etc.

I suppose this is similar to mobile me, but it's free.

The iBookstore is a separate app available in the app store, so I do not believe there will be a way to sync content with the app through iTunes.

I haven't seen anything in the iBooks app that allows you to open a book stored on the device itself either - even if assuming file access between apps or USB mass storage are features of the new OS.

I'm still not quite sure what you're talking about after reading your posts, but if it's what I think you are. YES you can sync .epub files you download from the internet. Add them to iTunes and they will be put in your Books section. Sync with iPad and they show up in iBooks.
