Checked bags at OKC airport last week. Checked two bags, both with AirTags (on different styles of connectors). They both checked in at the same last spot in baggage handling - and were missing when we picked up our luggage in LGA. Neither pinged again till yesterday, where they showed up at house/neighborhood near the airport. Pretty clear someone stole them, and obviously won't be able to use them since they are activation locked...

They probably think that one day they would unlock them as it’s already done with iPhones due to exploit of iCloud lock probably by someone from Apple

Any references for that?
Sure :)

Anything googled about “FMI off” might lead to it.
In short after few years new exploits are found and this allows to jailbreak “lost” device and unlock it from iCloud lock:

Interesting thing is that sometimes Apple also helps unlock old devices which were locked on not used iCloud account but without lost status.

Mine are marked as lost. Theft of items you can get for 26 bucks... seems not that smart. Shrug.

I hide my tags inside my luggage. Try that next time.

I don’t get it, it would be ‘cheaper’ for the thief to just buy their own instead of spending the time to try unlock them.

I keep about half mine in my luggage. These two bags happened to have them outside (oops).

So what is stopping you from: „Hello police, someone stole my property. Lucky, I can show you where it is at the moment.”???!?!!?

I mean I think the police won't care at all, about going to someone's house over 2 x 26 dollar items.
