I dont understand, if this is a netbook replacement or whatever.. then why do I need to hook it up to ANOTHER computer in order to.. umm download music... or update software??

Its suppose to be a computer of come sorts but i need to hook it up to another computer? Ironically I could hook this up to a netbook LOL

 How did you arrive at that conclusion?

Wifi & 3G = download directly......

You only need to connect to "ANOTHER computer" if you want to synch

like i said before, the case put its at an angle for typing, and it looks 100% perfect for what I need..

I find writing to be fatiguing, but I dont take my laptop because the thing is too much of a hassle (open/close, boot up, taking it out of bag because of ->)and weight IMO to take around to every class. I already adressed it, but I find it funny that someone says I only like tactile typing and I will get sick of the onscreen keyboard.. the iPhone is on its 3rd generation now, i think anyone will know what to expect from onscreen typing

it also has a drawing pop up with several different colors and some weird laser ball thing as well, id really like to see how this integrates into Pages for doing maybe a small sketch in BIO or something like that.

No, you will need to connect it to another computer in order to update its software as well. Just like the iPhone and iPod touch.

Basically, this think is a crippled computer. Still a cool toy though.

... by no means is it a replacement for a full computer. ... I have [an iPhone] and a laptop. ... It's not a full laptop so I can't use it in place of that. It's an overlap device that I don't really need, but can definitely see having fun with.

Money shot! Mine will sit, for the most part, on my coffee table. When I need to do quick Web research or email, it's very handy and has that nice screen (compared to iPhone). iBooks and Kindle app for reading...love it! It will also go along on my morning commute, to keep me informed and help pass the time, and will be much easier to use than even my 13" MBP in the small space available on the bus or train. Yep, $500 is a lot of money for a niche-filler. Yep, I can afford it and I like toys, Apple makes such nice ones, and more uses will be coming along. Fail? I don't think so.

I rather like this device. I just do some web stuff, email, listen to music and occasional document writing and LOTS of reading. For a lot of people this device is perfect. My Kindle seems like stone age tech now and my Macbook Air seems like a huge heavy burden I am holding on to because I need it to sync my iPhone and iPad. Once things start moving more to cloud based tech I think the iPad becomes more functional and relevant. For now I am totally pleased.

Hey! HP has a new product! It's a new netbook, only better. Also a great profit generator for HP. How so?

They took the keyboard off. You can pay more for one as an accessory.

Then they eliminated any USB ports. You can pay more for a restricted one as an accessory.

Then they hobbled the web browser. No one needs all the web, in their opinion.

Then they took away normal network sharing and easy access to shared folders on your home network. You might find an app for that, although it could cost a few bucks.

They were going to put a webcam on it, but decided to withhold it so they could add it to next year's model and make you buy that one too. Then they made sure you couldn't add a normal clip-on USB webcam to it.

They stripped away the standard independence we expect from notebooks/netbooks from it. You'll still need to cable it to a real PC to add your existing content from.

They added an app or two so you could buy media off the web. Of course they are limited to only the content HP has. HP promises it will work well on this new HP though.

They didn't bother with all the default apps you might depend on if you have a basic netbook. You'll have to find them and download them yourself.

They restrict it in several other ways, although they know better than you and know it's the right thing to do.

For the privilege, they doubled their usual netbook price. Then they lowered the available memory in it. Don't worry, if you want larger capacity you can pay them $100 or $200 more. No buying the $500 model and adding your own memory via SD or USB add-on, or a built-in hard drive bay.

They eliminated standard printer driver support. Don't worry though, there might be an app or two or three for that.

In exchange, you get a 10 hour battery. Good thing as you can't swap it out on your own. They made it cute too. Plays on human attraction to cute things even if they aren't fully developed. Like puppies and babies.

The press are drooling all over it. There was even a bump in HP's stock price.

Fortunately the majority of the buying public sees right through the scam. Only a few hundred thousand HP faithful fell for it. HP will survive though. The HP addicts will gladly keep buying things from them.

Does anyone wonder why there are HP haters out there? I apologize if you're one of those HP fanatics and I offended you.

If the ipad is such a big fail then why spend time talking about it? I never thought of my ipad as a netbook replacement. I've got a mifi that i use to get online.

And you know what if i decided to upgrade the SW on it when it comes out then only will i have to connect it to my MBP. But even though it has to be connected to a MBP or PC so what? Sounds like people are trying to find something to nit pick about.

But haters go right ahead. Because myself and the other macusers and will keep buying apple products and enjoying them.

OH and BTW all the bad publicity of calling the ipad fail is actually creating buzz and causing people to go see what the ipad is about who didnt think about it before.

Bad publicity or in this case Hater publicity is good publicity

Cheers! :D

Really?? It has Microsoft Office? It has Photoshop and Illustrator? It has iLife and Toast? Wow, I guess I really missed something today then. That means you either have $500 to blow on a cool toy, or are you someone who doesn't actually do anything productive with a computer? Sorry, but I fail to see where this product fits a need that I (and I would bet most computer users) have. I've got my Macintosh and iPod Touch. Pretty sure that covers all my bases. There's really nothing the iPad can do that these devices don't already exceed at.

I have $500 to spend on a device to replace my crappy Kindle and Netbook. The iPad is the best purchase I have made in years.

iPad is a fail when comparing it to a laptop/desktop computer. Apple never claims that this will replace them. I have a laptop and desktop at home, as well as an iPhone. When I'm on the couch at home and wanted to surf the web, I use my iPhone 100% of the time. The fact that my laptop takes like 5 minutes to completely boot up and that it only lasts 3-4 hours in battery life makes the iPad better for casual use. But don't get me wrong, I absolutely have no need for the iPad, it's just a toy and is a win in this area.

Got rid of my Kindles a couple of weeks ago. Now I'm just waiting for the 3G to be released. And you're right, Kindle looks like it could have been released 10 years ago (at least).

Heh, I'm a gadget (and book) freak and its 80s-era ugliness kept me from ever buying one. (I went with the Sony for e-ink.)

Meanwhile, when you do think this'll tick over the one million mark? A week?

Can you give his multi task crap a rest? I agree that the iPhone OS or any other mobile OS systems are singular task oriented. Yeah certain background processes run in the back like pandora but normally you are doing one task as at time. This is clear on the iPhone or android. The screen is too small but to use one app at a time. If you made your iPhone look like os x then you couldn't get anything done because it's so small.

The new iPhone OS tweaks use a task manager/ alt+tab scheme but you are only saving the states of the application. So that way it creates fast switching....this is not true multi task.

I think as we progress....the iPad is nothing more than a learning phase to how tablet computing should be done. Love it or hate it.

That's pretty narrow minded. Just because it's appears to be the right device for you doesn't mean others agree with this. I'll probably get one because I love toys and can afford it. But by no means is it a replacement for a full computer. Yes, I realize that Apple never promised this, but that doesn't change people's mind on it. I have a Touch and a laptop. I can't use an iPad in a lot of places due to it's size. It's not a full laptop so I can't use it in place of that. It's an overlap device that I don't really need, but can definitely see having fun with. For some, that is clearly a fail. Why does it bother you that people have a different opinion than you do?

I totally agree with you. I am on the fence precisely because of the overlap with other computer equipment I use. It's a toy for me. Can I justify it? Not really.

Exactly why I won't buy one. It would be toy and nothing more. I can spend my hard-earned money elsewhere :)
