I bought a Brand New AT1 160GB only because I can connect it to my older TV with Component connections, yet I have HDMI for newer TV's also I will take it with me when I visit People, so it is portable, unlike the ATV2, you need an iTunes Library to connect to.

I have yet to set it up, but why does everyone complain about copying media to it, is it that bad to get music, movies and photos on it?

No, it's easy to sync content to :apple:TV1- just click some check boxes in iTunes and it moves right over. The gripers gripe because THE way forward per Apple is now one of streaming only. Like Flash makes no sense. Like 1080p playback hardware makes no sense. Like Blu Ray options make no sense. Etc.

Frankly, having owned :apple:TV1 from the very beginning and spending a good amount of time trying to like :apple:TV2 better, I'm still using the former. I do like local storage better than streaming everything (why couldn't Apple make that USB port on the new one capable of adding that option for those who want it, by simply attaching whatever size of storage they desire?). I think the last generation UI on :apple:TV1 is vastly superior to the UI on the new one.

I'm still looking for :apple:TV3... the one with:
  • 1080p hardware for those of us with 1080 HD camcorder videos (renders just fine via iMovie, plays just fine in iTunes; can't get it from the little box to the 1080HDTV in 1080)
  • the latest gen UI from the old model as an updated UI to the new model
  • apps, so that third parties can fill in the gaps that Apple chooses to ignore in the software
  • an "open" or normalized USB port for third parties to extend the hardware for those looking for it to do a little more than what the onboard hardware can handle
Personally, I'd pay several hundred more than $99 for this device.

Haven't gotten an AT2 yet...

For me the ONLY way that I use my AT1 is through a networked drive plugged into my airport. I rip my DVDs from the computer then copy them over to the NAS drive.

I store some music and photos on the HD of the AT1, but that wouldn't be a big deal to lose. But not having the computer on to watch my content is a big deal. I don't always have my computer with me.(sometimes I leave it at work) And I have way too much video to store locally on my computer. Plus it would clutter up my iTunes because I use that for music. So to me, the AT2 just isn't there yet.

That being said. I think the potential of the AT2 is huge. When the USB port is opened, and it can start communicating with the old AT1. I can't wait to jump on board.

i had the first gen 40gb Atv and now have the new one and while having a hard drive is nice to be able to store some content for instant access, I don't miss it.. at all

I love how the new atv is so small it can actually fit under the tv!! not as in under the tv cabinet.. literally under the overhang of the tv edges!! soo small!! i know someone who has it sitting on the tv stand itself!

plus with the new airplay, having a iphone/pad is like having an external HDD anyway

The new device is a massive improvement in reliability and performance over the original, both in terms of hardware and streaming. Can't emphasise it enough.

The HDD in the original is still a useful feature though depending on how you use it. I've moved my original ATV in to the kids' playroom, copied over a load of movies, cartoons etc and turned wireless off, so there's no worry about non-suitable material on it.

No way I like it way better. Two of my biggest pain points have been answered.

  • Goes to sleep automatically
  • Does NOT require syncing

If I have to walk my a$$ over to the computer to make purchases so be it. Besides I purchased content directly from my 1st gen ATV 3 times, and 2 of those required support from Apple to recover my content.

+1...I'm there too. Syncing and the HDD was useless. The day I discovered that I was able to set the ATv1 to stream only, my problems were gone. ATv2 is way better.

agreed, technically couldn't you plug a USB HDD in there if apple were to issue a cable for it? would keep the ATV1 users happy whilst minimizing cost's at the same time.
