Hi All,

As an iPhone user (who has also been an Android user a couple of times), and an Apple user in general I am still flabbergasted at comments I read on Apple/iPhone articles I see around the web. I have never seen such rage, hatred, caps lock use, and exclamation marks :/

A couple of articles this week have gotten me thinking about it again. The first was an article on a news site here in the UK about a 'continuity error' in Apple's Christmas TV advert. Of course there is NO continuity error whatsoever and the writer of the article obviously missed the fact that the woman snapped out of her daydream at the end, hence the completely different lighting and the fact that the guy no longer had an AirPod in his ear. Regardless of the fact that the video was also embedded in the article the comments section proceeded to go to town on Apple. Comments such as calling Apple users idiots, misinformed comments about FaceID failing in the presentation, just so much anger towards...a tech company...and a product they don't intend to own. Strange.

Anyway, today I read an iPhone X review on a UK based gaming site. The review was reasonably accurate and summed up the X pretty well. The comments section however exploded in fury, people ranting about others spending so much on a phone, down voting any common sense balanced comments, and voting up all the 'Apple are crap, android forever!' comments. One guy posted a really good comment in response to the removal of the headphone jack about how good the AirPods are, their features, and how it felt natural to use them.....NOPE!.....massive down votes! The other shocking thing is the ignorance and complete lack of understanding, spewing forth comments that are pretty embarrassing.

I always try and take a step back and look at the bigger picture, but I honestly don't care who uses what phone, from what company, or how much they spent on it. I don't go to Android specific forums and voice my dislike of Android (because I don't really have any to be honest, some of the Android flagships are very good). This forum is a great example of it. For as far back as I can remember people have come here in droves just to say they don't like the products and why they are switching/would never buy one.

Is it age, social status, or something else that compels this behaviour? Would love to hear others thoughts.

If you ARE one of those people though, don't turn this into one of those threads, its not for that. Instead only explain what compels you to preach to whoever will listen.

Thanks guys and gals.
[doublepost=1511779411][/doublepost]Also forgot to add that in public I see many many people using Apple products, but going by comment sections and forums does that mean that on a train, or in a shop, or wherever else an Android user is possibly watching you with complete hate and distain?

My director absolutely hates Apple products and services with a passion, all because of a bad experience he had with iTunes once and Apple support over a decade ago! It's like a bull to a red reg mentioning Apple products in his presence! lol He was on about smart speakers the other day, personally don't have one yet, but eyeing up the Google Max when that comes out since I subscribe to Google Play. He was OK with that, but then I mentioned the one Apple are launching, and before I could finish he said oh that'll be a cheaply built crap sounding overpriced PoS because Apple can't do anything right for their customers. Overpriced it might be, but I doubt it'll sound crap and I've had nothing but good experience with Apple support!

Suffice to say, he has a deep, unjustified hatred of Apple fans while exhibiting the same level of fanboyism towards Microsoft and their disjointed collection of hardware and software services. But that's OK in his book, because it's not Apple, lol

I completely get where you are coming from. I have seen intelligent people who are often very well balanced, reduced to a foaming rabbit animal at the mere mention of Apple. At work we are are getting rid of our BB Z10's (which are truly bad) in favour of iPhone SE's. Straight away a colleague messaged me to say he has received his and its crap. I just can't comprehend how someone who has had to suffer a BB Z10 would say that without even giving the SE a chance. I tend to distance myself from those conversation as it doesn't seem right to me that grown ups behave in this way without questioning themselves about their irrational reactions. The person in question here owns a Galaxy S8 (a great phone) so Im not sure if that has anything to do with it? Saying that, he should be more than aware of how bad the BB is.

You never know who are behind those comments. Maybe some of them are hired by rival companies?

The Chinese government is notorious for hiring tens of thousands of people actively participating in comments / Weibo to divert public opinion.

Tall-poppy syndrome plays a big part.

Immaturity & other deficiencies also rear their ugly heads.

This also applies the other way....with Samsung another giant now, their haters exhibit similar irrational personality traits.

These people need to be moderated & escorted out from places like this.

Yeah it's surprising because he's generally a very intelligent, and as you say, balanced individual who wouldn't be where he was if he were any different. I've never had the misfortune of owning any BB phone but I've heard good and mostly bad things! I had an SE for two years, loved it, and even now I do miss the "phone first" nature of it in terms of usability. Here's the thing - I've got a complete mix of things in my house depending on use case. iPad for my tablet as that's what I got as my first iOS device, iPhone X for my every day carry because getting an iPhone after my iPad made total sense given the apps and integration, and I've got Android boxes hooked up to TVs for playing media because most of my services are provided by Google. I've got a Surface Pro for everyday work, and an old Macbook Air for the odd times I need to check compatibility with something. I don't hate on any one provider and just use what is best for my needs. Locking yourself to one provider can have integration benefits, but less so these days, and irrational hatred gets you nowhere!

When IGN published their review about the iPhone X I decided to write a comment on their Facebook page link. Shouldn't have done that. They had no sufficient arguments against me so they came up with some dumb comments. There wasn't an actual discussion, but they probably thought they had me by the balls.

Tip: never comment were Android fanboys or Windows fanboys are to be found, you're gonna regret it. :p

Btw, for those interested in what it was like: https://www.facebook.com/ign/posts/10155365540001633. See comment of Tom de Beer, that's me haha. Here's a few of my favorite comments. :D

If you actually did research you would know the display is not made by Apple. Matter as fact, it's just iOS, Apple doesn't have a single original thought with the phone. Reason it is so expensive... Gotta pay Samsung somehow

Dude I work in the cell phone industry and have for 9 years trust me the tech on the phone is years behind everything that's in it android has had for years. I have messed with it and honestly the 8 is better. The x with its all touch screen body is a pain in the ass to navigate and close out apps. But hey if you wanna spend a grand on old tech be my guess its amazing how apple has people brainwashed so bad.

Ironic. Please do research. The OLED panel is used on many Android phones, AND was actually created by Samsung. Facial recognition is a gimmick. Oh and did you see the boy who unlocked his mom's AND dad's phone? The notch is also so annoying and tedious. Especially for us programmers who have to change the interface just so people can use our app. It's just a $1000 Snapchat machine. That's all it's meant for. It appeals no other audience. Programmers? We prefer Linux and configurable operating systems that let us write, execute, compile, and run code. Photographers? There's a reason they used an Android phone for a news paper.

Musicians? Every musician I know doesn't want any new iPhones due to the idiotic idea of removing the headphone jack. Oh also, the iPhone isn't IP68 rated. Have fun! I'll get back to my Moto Mods working on projects on my phone with Termux and Vim, whilst listening to music, emailing people, and texting on Telegram at the same time. Oh and not having to fix the letter "I".

@tom :Camera and face I'd tech so very old. Kinect would like to say hi as they came with their technology which means Ms did it first. Kinect 2.0 was far more advanced then what can be done in iPhone x and cost equivalent to at least 5 iPhone x. Nokia 1020 still has the bests camera out there. It did even better than some DSLR cameras. No phone to this day came close. IOS software is now more like Android. Features that come with updates copies Android which has it years ago. So essentially u are paying 1* for a phone that has old tech, slightly fast CPU unnecessary glad back that breaks after 1 drop and kiddie features where u can make your memes. So worth 1K lol. Only idiots will buy into an overpriced product. Oled screen is unnecessary. After a certain point you won't see any difference . Slight darker colors does make it worth 1000 dollars.

Best screen that is made by samsung yea we know us samsung users have had the best screen for a few years now welcome to 2015 apple

But have you read the comments from the Apple fanboys? LOL most of them only parrot what the Apple store teenager tells them lol. They've got no real opinion.

I mean, I read IGN, it’s so much anger and hatred and just the hatred.

^ 100 points for those who recognize this quote (with the exception of the 'read IGN' part). xD

I think there's several things at work here that contribute to the problem.

1) Apple was the first company to enjoy such a level of brand loyalty that it bordered on religion for how deeply people felt about it. When people care THAT deeply, you often get emotional responses....their limbic system overwhelms their rational thought. It also means that they can feel personally betrayed when they don't get what they want.

2) People are emboldened by the anonymity of the internet. They say things they never would in polite, real world conversation, as there's little to any repercussions of them doing so. Certainly no repercussions to their real life.

3) Yes, there's a lot of immaturity out there. There's a wide range of different ages to be found in any forum. And, honestly, some of them really enjoy just "stirring the pot". Their hobby is to be an online assh---.

I am much the same, I currently own products by Amazon, Sonos, Sony, Samsung, Google and probably more. As a tech enthusiast I enjoy them all. If someone was to tell me how great their S8 is Id be like "yeah its a really gorgeous phone", in contrast I went over to see a friend the other day and in the brief second my screen illuminated as I was placing the phone down on a desk he clocked it and said "is that the new iPhone? Silly boy!". I find it so strange.

You make some good points, a lot are kids maybe I was a bigger a$$hole on the internet when I was 17 than I am now. I don honestly believe that the cost of Apple products is a big contributing factor. Often when someone can't afford something they say they don't like it and they much prefer the 'better' cheaper alternative. I tend to avoid the mine is better than yours chats on forums these days as I could literally be arguing with an 11 year old.

Yep, that's generally what it boils down to - some people think that their choice is the only choice and everybody else should think the same and anybody who chooses differently is an idiot. The only idiots out there are those who fail to recognise the merits of all technologies and how they cater for the different needs of the population. It's like my car - I love my Golf R. Best all-round car I've ever had. My mate just bought a new Mercedes A class AMG thing. Looks mean, spoilers on top of spoilers, very flash, very fast, and totally him. Not my style though, and that fisher-price screen they mount on the dash is awful, lol

It works both ways. For years Windows users have been subjected to negative comments because a disgruntled user had used some version of windows 10 years ago, had a bad experience, and assumed it is still the same. I am a Mac user but the current version of Windows is actually pretty good.

Heck I remember a time, where I had to constantly defend using an Apple computer. The common complaint back then was Apple was no good because there was very little software available or they were not "compatible".

Closed minded persons will have closed minded opinions.

That said, I am amazed at how anti -Apple my computer engineer son-in-law is becoming. He thinks Apple has lost its way with Animojis and FaceID, argues anyone could sit me down and make me look at my X screen to unlock it.

Wouldn't that indicate I would at that moment have a lot bigger problems than Face ID?

My old CIO was like that.

Another C-level exec (new to the company) requested a MBP, and the CIO denied his request.

New C-level exec started using his personal MBP at work, so the CIO finally relented, ordering new MBPs + displays for both of them.

Now the CIO is a huge Apple fan and that's all he uses at home. Go figure.

People get passionate about their devices. I used to be one of those who loathes Apple but really why? It was simply because of the cost but look at what a good quality phone costs anymore. Good luck getting updates on a budget Android Phone so security really becomes an issue. If Android works for you great if not try iOS. It’s surprising how fluid of an experience and different iOS is compared to Android from a personal experience. I want an iPad now. Maybe if people tried using a device for a while they would like it. The price? Well Samsung high end phones are almost $1000 so why complain?

I think it is a simple us vs them pack mentality. People get bent out of shape about others preference of inanimate objects.

Think of how some people go nuts over sports and the team they support. I can understand the people directly involved would care so much. Like the team owner, managers, coaches, players and support staff. But some fans go completely nuts. Rioting if their team loses. Getting in fights or attacking fans wearing a rival teams colors. Going nuts and yelling at the TV. It is completely idiotic behavior. Caring so much about the success of a team. They have absolutely no involvement with.

The same can be seen in politics. Were every proposal from one side is evil and must be stopped by the other. When for the most part when the opposition comes in power. They then propose the same plans with very minor superficial tweaks. Which are then decried as evil.

Perhaps it is a need for validation of choices made and defense of those choices. No matter how trivial they are. Car nuts will do this for vehicle brands and aftermarket part upgrades or OEM vs aftermarket parts. There is the PS4 vs XBone debates. AMD or Intel. AMD or nVidia.

I suppose although its a forum, people have a right to their view as well. This will always be an issue, but all you can do is really ignore it...

Although if its "all caps" its probably less hard, particularly if it's colored or Bold it stands out more, but there is really nothin you can do.

Basically, your always gonna get those types who hate something regardless, because the simple fact it, u cannot control it where everyone can express their views..

You can try,, but nothing is 100% effective everywhere.

I think the right additive to take is ... 'just don't go there.' People need to change their ways, as the only way... We can keep saying "but we have to read" and rationalize it how we like, but at the end of the day it still comes down to one option only.

The Cult of Mac used to be small and fun and no one paid it any attention. The Cult of Mac turned into the Cult of iPhone got big, arrogant, and overbearing so now people preemptively strike.

If you're on a gaming website talking about how wonderful your iPhone is you sort of have to expect to get pounced on you're in enemy terrain and just jumped up and down in a clown suit. People like on both sides like their junk and will defend it with some intensity and emotion.
