See my reply 14 above.
Hang on a minute, while I run AJA System Test Lite on my SSD:
(it's a "Sandisk Plus", sitting in a plugable.com USB3/SATA docking station, 2012 Mini)
Here we go:
Reads: 424
Writes: 334

The writes are as fast as they ever were, after being used quite a while.

I've been saying this on this forum for years now:
TRIM is not "an issue" -- at least, it never has become one in my usage.
And I've been booting and running via USB3 for SIX YEARS now.

is thunderbolt the same as usb-c?

My understanding is that Thunderbolt 3 has the same port shape of USB-C but has more features and bandwidth.
The 2012 Mini doesn’t have Thunderbolt 3.

I would say install the SSD on your 2012 Mini. It will make a big difference that you will notice immediately.
And I don’t expect Apple will drop support for the 2012’s next year. They run fine and are able to support Metal.

With the spinner vlc keeps hanging after a few minutes
This was not the case on high sierra
The 2012 has another thunderbolt so?
If so I'd better open it up or go trimless

The current Mini has Thunderbolt 3.

Our 2012’s have just Thunderbolt

The SSD upgrade is astonishing. You will be pleased
