Probably boils down to how good, or how basic, the 2020 base level iPad is.
This is a good point. One never knows that the next iteration of an Apple product may look like (or be priced like) and sometimes you might not like the changes. There is at least some argument for buying the thing that you think you would be happy with for a while just in case. Nothing prevents an upgrade later and of course the higher priced iPads will bring more on resale/trade in toward the next purchase. But my personal history has been that I wind up holding on to electronics much longer than I think I will.

So, I went to the Apple Store today and had a chance to play around with all of the iPads. I felt like the 2018 iPad would suffice, but I liked the screen of the pro models a good bit more and they did feel more zippy to me on even basic things (perhaps it is just because I expected that to be the case). The call between last year's pro and this year's model is more difficult, particularly if I stay at the 10.5/11 inch size, which is what I initially intended. But now I am not so sure about the size either.

The 12.9 would be great for photo editing on vacation, for reading magazines and for sheet music. And I also do a little audio recording with Garageband, which I have always done on my iMac. Who knows what avenues might be opened up with a larger screen and the power of the new Pro? But the 12.9 is that much bigger and slightly heavier, so it doesn't feel quite as natural or comfortable as a hand/lap held device, which is really how I use it most of the time. A good dilemma. :)

If you actually hold it a lot up in the air while reading, walking around, etc. I'd think maybe the smaller would be better. But anyone I've known ends up having it rest in their lap, prop it up against a pillow in bed, etc. where weight isn't an issue at all.

If you can afford it, don't need to hold it up in the air, and don't need to shove it into a small bag or purse all the time....go big. ;)

You're right. I probably generally wind up resting it on my lap or on a desk or something. I carry it daily in a backpack to/from work along with a lot of other stuff that's already pretty heavy and often carry a second bag with a work laptop in it. And I will be using it on a train, so there are some space constraints there. I'm going to give it a little time to percolate and will no doubt check it out again before deciding. I'll probably wait until Apple's holiday return policy kicks in, so I'll have a little longer amount of time to try it out and make sure I am comfortable with the decision.
