It looks like apps can show an escape key, but don't necessarily. It's not clear what happens with the touch bar if you're using an app that predates it. (For that matter, what about clamshell mode? Will there be functionality in the touch bar that you can't access at all if you're using the machine as a desktop?)

I just don't get there "this is 45 years old". So? QWERTY is a lot older than that. The idea of a "space bar" is also very old.

I agree. The 45 year thing is just smoke and mirrors. The reality is they replaced the same thing with a screen. Its still not gone.

Touchid appears to be a power button on its own so that takes care of that.

Pressing the fn key brings up the classic function keys on the touchbar, so that takes care of that.

Would have been cool if the touchbar was called the "control strip" :)

Now i have to decide which one to get.
