I wouldn't present all the content at first sight.

Your key goal would be to have a visitor recognize what this website is for.

At the moment, it looks more like a catalog, not like a website. And, by the way, you can't do design by asking others what they think. Your first was the best, and then you lost focus by trying to cater to the opinions.

There's only one person who can say how it should look like: you. Do it, stand up to it, and then improve. Trying to be a success out of the starting gate will just make you a failure.

Any creative has to stand on his own legs. Or he's lost.

Design by asking other people, no... but improving the design by asking others, yes.

As for that comment about the first concept, maybe to you it looks better visually, but there were several technical issues with it. The first and most important being the size of the body copy and the non standard web font for the text. The second, it being too wide - some users would have to scroll horizontally to see all the content.
