You do know that LCD screens DOES NOT HAVE BURN IN? That's a problem with a different form of display technology.

Better try next time, go back to your mom's basement please.

At work I have a Dell UltraSharp 2005 FPW 20" lcd monitor that definitely does suffer from burn-in. I use Photoshop most time of the day, and when using any other application, I can clearly see Photoshop's pallette window borders. Really annoying. I don't have a picture ready (since it's Sunday now), but lots of stories can be found about burn-in on lcd screens.

It isn't a desired behavior. Leopard should recognize it's in movie mode and paused and should take actions to prevent harm.

Nicer DVD players will actually put up a primitive screen saver type deal. Nice TVs will automatically protect themselves when there has been the same image on the screen for more than XX time.

This honestly take all of about 20 lines of code to execute.

The solution is to set your screen saver to a slide show of pure white images over night. Set brightness to low, but not off. Let it run overnight. Turn the computer off for a couple hours after the overnight.

you guys are both wrong..

there's an option in Front Row that allows you to choose whether you want the screensaver to display or not. See Apple is great!

I think this has already been answered but here's my two or three cents worth. I work in a public building with many many plasma & lcd screens showing the same footage day in day out.

Permanent burn-in does exist for PLASMA and CRT displays, though you can 'bleach' the image out somewhat displaying white images and such, but burn in is a very common problem with these screens.

LCD screens however do not suffer from burn in. Peter Griffin lingering around on your mac display is what’s known as Image Persistence. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_persistence

The effects are completely reversible - you just need to be able to cope with having your mac off for a short-ish period of time.

Working with such a variety of screens, i can definitely tell you LCD screens are curable of lingering animation stills.

Resolved...........

Wow, i turned off my Mac, for a while, maybe 6 hours or more and the burn in has substantially lessened. and now i cant see any trace of it, THANK GOODNESS! yey carefull... burn in is still a possibility, and hope i dont get it again.

Burn in is not possible. Burn in is not reversible. It's image persistence.

Burn In does not happen with LCD screens. Burn In only happens with phosophorus based technology such as CRT Tubes and Plasma. Plasma will burn in quicker then a CRT Tube.

It is Image Persistance as mentioned, and resolves itself. The only time you'll ever need to burn in a negative image is with Plasma, CRT Tubes, and older Rear Projection TV's. And this negative image never fully takes out an image that has been burned into a phosophorus based display.

This guy is right. Have a 17" Samsung LCD that sits on my Mac mini G4 and my fiance uses it to check her email. I had to get her in the habit of turning off the LCD when she's done. Since then, the image persistence has disappeared.

If I leave the monitor on for a few days, I can see parts of whatever is on the screen start to come back (she checks her email every 4-5 days on the average).

I would never own another CRT or purchase a plasma. Hoping that LED monitors will start being produced in big numbers in the next few years.

k something is really up

peter griffin went away after a while of use, i couldnt see him after say 2-3 hours.....

just today after going to apple.com to watch the guided tour of the macbook air i noticed that on the right side of my screen was the episode listings of family guy....noticable on white/grey backgrounds......

i really should stop sleeping to family guy on front row....but what the hell i really should be able to.....how can i stop this? im angered

called apple care

im taking my iMac back to the apple store folks!!!

for the love of god please be a pleasant experience...

i have to lug this big'ass badboy all the way there, they better do something to better my situation

So heres and update to my situation....

just got back from apple store yorkdale......talked to an mac genious....explained my burn-in/black light issues with my lcd....after not saying a word for a good 20 min, he comes back with this response

"well we normally dont cover lcd burn ins because thats a maintenance issue"

and before i could call his ******** he says'

"but just this once we'll order in the parts to replace it"

and because i didnt have the energy to argue with him, i just let him think he was doing me a favor.....

i had to lug my big ass imac all the way down there (my hands are numb), he says that hell give me a call when the lcd is in store, then i have to go BACK there to drop off the imac, and then wait 2 days for him to give me a call when its ready so i can pick it up again....

this is probably standard procedure but this is ****ing annoiying....im new to the mac world but my last dell laptop was a breeze to have repaired.....

i called, they sent out a box, i recieve box, drop computer in box and then call fedex for pickup....i think wait a day to recieve a fixed computer at my doorstep....

this just seems overkill.....

a 'maintenance' issue my ass.....this is the first time ive ever had this issue, and when i show it to people theyre shocked at how obvious it is....

i am not a happy camper

Understand the beef about having to take the imac back and forth for this repair, but it's pretty cool that they are replacing it for you.

i dunno, maybe i have a false sense of entitlement with my computer manufacturers....

should i be grateful that theyre repairing a legitimate problem?

should i be grateful that theyre repairing a legitimate problem?

Each person that works the genius bar is different. I've had some that have flat out been "no way" until I've pushed it. Others have seen the problem, knew what I'd done to resolve it and have offered a fix. And even with repeated issues (MacBook Pro batteries), it was mixed. So yes, even though it's a legit problem, I think getting someone to repair it without having to escalate, grateful would be a word I would use.

turn your screensaver setting on!! Its called a screensaver for a reason. And also be thankful they're going to fix an $600+ LCD panel for free. Thats not something they or any company would normally do.
