Samsung is killing it in the large screen web traffic in North America!

Several years following their North American debut, smartphones with five-inch and larger screens, nicknamed phablets, have become decidedly mainstream. Samsung has designed both of its latest flagship Galaxy S devices with screens surpassing the five-inch mark, and Apple released its first phablet-style iPhone earlier this fall. With Samsung’s sizable number of offerings in the segment, it’s no wonder that users of its larger-screened smartphones drive more than 77% of all phablet-based Web traffic within North America. However, current usage statistics point to a competitive marketplace with a variety of brands achieving success with new five-inch and greater phone models.

To quantify the distribution of Web usage among all available phablet models, Chitika Insights sampled tens of millions of U.S. and Canadian smartphone-based online ad impressions running through the Chitika Ad Network. The impressions were then segmented based on phone screen size. The data used to compile current usage share were drawn across the time range of November 6 through 12, 2014.

As the article itself states, not really that surprising. Three points that caught my eye:

1). I'm a bit surprised that he iPhone 6+ percentage is even up to 3.9%, considering its short time available and what has appeared to be limited supply.

2). Shows how few Nexus phones are actually sold, considering the Nexus 5 has nearly half the web traffic as the LG G2, another phone that didn't exactly fly off the shelves.

3). No sign of HTC. :(

Phablet Status Report: 77% of North American Usage from Samsung Users

One thing that is interesting is how all these companies vacated the sub 5 inch screen size market. IMO any company that makes a sub 5 inch phone with equal specs to the above 5 inch phones will lock in that market space. That market area is just there for the taking.

This pretty much ends the argument in the other thread. Samsung owns 3/4 of the market and every model is leading by a significant amount. iPhone 6+ will unlikely ever exceed the older but still superior Note II. Actually looking to buy another if I can find new with stock Android 4.1.3 since bootloader can be unlocked.

I'd be interested in seeing the usage distribution for 5.3" and above.

I don't consider 5" to be phablet territory.

So the iPhone 6 plus is outselling the note 4 in the Us, interesting.

6+ has been out twice as long plus it's unclear if 3.9% is before or after returns for defects such as for bending, TLC NAND, screen issues, etc.

Lol the iPhone 6 plus is literally not even 3 months old as a new device yet you dismiss it already huh. I'd guess you'll start seeing sales increase for this phone in the future.

This doesn't end any argument. You mean how the s5 has lost 40% sales?

Just realized they included the s4 and s5 in that chart, which imo are not phablets. Makes that chart misleading.

3% for the plus is prolly on par considering how new it is and the supply constraints.

I'm in complete agreement. The Smartphone market has evolved and matured, it's all about how you use it and for how long. Many who work in an office all day with ready access to a computer and desk phone don't have the same needs like I do, as just one example.

Currently highly Mobile, yet requiring constant connectivity to the web, I rely on my Smartphone as an all in one device that allows be to stay connected in airports, other countries etc.

Finally Apple has made the tool I rely on, a 5.5" iPhone 6+ that I find ideally suited to my needs, preferences and work flow.

I'm sure the 6 plus will only increase. 1 week ago it was hard to walk into a store and get one. I just walked into apple yesterday and walked out with one no problem.

Nice! What do you think so far?

I really really like it. The last year or two I have been using various android phones, so it is refreshing going back to IOS. I love the feel of the phone in hand (naked, with AppleCare+). The battery life seems like it will be crazy good and it is going to totally replace my need for a tablet.

Totally agree. I got one last night. Between that and my Note 4 I never use my iPad anymore. I use my 6+ naked too. I am exploring widgets right now. Tbayrs showed me they do exist in IOS. Gonna check it out. But loving the big screen of the 6+

Makes sense since Samsung virtually invented the classification, and has several models currently in use. Apple only has one recent phablet.

I may be in the minority, but I really like safari on IOS better than chrome on android.

Yep.... It totally fits with the devices available. I think the 6+ usage will go up a little.

I just can't use it..... I prefer Chrome because it syncs with all my other devices.

Well considering the Note is on it's 4th release and IMO if you own a 2 or a 3 there's really no need to buy a Note 4.....hmmm....

What more interesting is even Nexus 5 outsold Note 4! Anyway, as Note 4 only released recently so it's not surprised.

For me, a real indicator is the percentage of 6 Plus compared to Note 4. That tells us more about the potential of the future market leader in that space.

It's from your source. Note 4 2.1% and Nexus 5 2.4%. Anyway, as I said Note 4 only released less than a month, so I wasn't surprised. Anyway, I responded to FFR's post about 6+ even outselling Note 4 that also based on this chart.

Except you interpreted it wrong…..that is web traffic…..NOT SALES.
So did you have another source?

Note 4 is the newest one on the list having only been out for about a month with 10/17/2014 release date.

Google never released its number officially, but analysts estimated from 3 to 5 million had been sold which also based partially from web traffic. I don't think Note 4 would have been sold for 5 million in less than a month.

Exactly!
