Phone Will Not Work With Edge Data All Phones

Confirmed with Apple today.

If you are browsing the web on edge data service (not wifi, make sure wifi is off) or email is being sent or transmitted your phone will absolutely NOT WORK!

Apple stated this was to maximize the edge experience. By turning off the edge channels used by the phone (for voice) while the phone is in edge data mode more bandwith is available for the data service.

I discovered this today while surfing and downloading email I missed 8 calls in a row, phone never buzzed, never rang nothing.

You can test this out yourself, turn off wifi, now start downloading email, now call the phone from another phone. You will go straight to voicemail.

Or you can try this... place a call, put the phone on speaker now try to go and check your email, you will rec a message about the edge data service not being available while the phone is in use!

So basically immagine you are somewhere w/o wifi and you are opening web pages and the like, perhaps getting an update or something, or perhaps a really large attachment. All voice calls will be re-directed to voicemail NONE will get through.. or immagine you need to make a call while the device is on the data network no-go!

I begged them to please change this, they would not (apple) confirm if or when they would change it but indicated they could change via a software update!
 
oh, thats crazy, definitely need to change it, its a phone, they need to get the priority straight.

I know other phones have this issue, but apple flat out stated that it doesn't have to be this way. My HTC Hermes works with simultainious voice and data no problem, the iphone can do this and should do this. Above all else this is the i PHONE!
 
Not really a surprise. Did you actually expect this to work?

By the way it works wonderfully while using wifi. You can talk on the phone and use google maps, browse the web, email and all the rest.

Yeah this works great, but if you aren't in a wifi hot-spot and you need to use the device as a phone and say, check email, or I don't know download google maps or something... your phone is going to fail to act as a phone.. I sadly must go get my Hermes out of the drawer and put the sim in there. Apple advised I wait until day 13 upon which I will return the phone if no patch has been released and loose my $70.00. As a lifelong mac fan I am eternally hopeful that apple will fix this in the next two weeks (PLEASE APPLE PLEASE!)

All Apple has to do is make it so the phone drops the EDGE Data connection (pretty standard) when a phone call comes in, that's pretty simple, the phone can resume the download when the phone is disconnected.

I would suggest a popup, asking users if they want to pick up the phone or continue with what they are doing and let phone-call goto voicemail.
 
Uh - You're saying one can't use the net (Edge) and talk at the same time?
That's exactly one feature that was important for us. Apple didn't say it can only do this if running on WiFi. :eek: I almost don't believe this.

That's a terrific idea, answer or ignore.. very elegant and simple, cause you might feel the data connection is more imortant, man thats got apple written all over it...

come on guys.. pretty please.. I'll buy an 8 core pro if you'll fix this phone.. it's only 20 little items, this IMHO being the biggest...

Turn of your wifi and test it, I promise.. I almost had a stroke when I realized it... you can use the methods in my previous post to test.. when you do PLEASE take the time to call AT&T and tell them about it.. ask to talk to an APPLE IPHONE SPECIALIST! They will transfer you to apple, make sure when they get you there that it's apple and not ATT> let them hear it.. they can fix this!

That's weird...when I use my Motorola Q in data mode it can still receive calls. It'll drop the data connection and put the call through.

Is it really worth getting that worked up about? I mean, it has a lot of awesome features and all of those things can work on Wi-Fi, if you NEED to use them on EDGE, then use them. Maybe decide whether or not you can afford to miss calls at the time. Plus, with visual voicemail, you can see whose calls you missed and just call them back.

I hope they fix it too, but c'mon.
 
jsh - It's just that that was a feature of the phone we were told about. Unless I missed something, they didn't disclaimer it to 'wifi only feature'. So yes, some folks might have REALLY wanted that feature.

I dont have the iphone, but i would say yes, its a big deal. I bought a blackberry pearl a few months ago (which is the reason I'm not in the market for the iphone.) Yesterday afternoon i was pretty jealous hearing all the reports of folks opening and being stunned by their iphones. But after some of the various flaws started coming in im glad i'll have to wait for a 2nd generation. Some of these issues, especially this one are deal breakers. Sure it seems like its really elegant and beautiful and has a bunch of great features, but they should not take away from what the main function of the device is, to take calls. If I'm on a business trip and what to access the internet I'd like to do so knowing that I wont be endanger of missing calls.

You have to enabled DTM hack. It's ## some numbers... leads to a menu.

Search on the Q users forums and you'll find it. The annoying thing is it has to be done after every reset... and with the Q... that's often.

You must have been in a lull of data transfer. I tried loading Engadget (pretty big site, lots of pictures) and it just rang away while I called the iPhone.

After it was done transferring I called and it went through.
 
if u read the manual, it says that u cant surf on EDGE, while call is coming in, it wont ring.
 
I guess I had this experience with my BlackBerry when I was on US Cellular, so I just learned to use the wireless when I didn't mind getting a voice mail (although, intermittently I had phone calls come through), or if I needed to use Google maps or something.

I assume that I'll treat the iPhone the same way, since most of my leisurely surfing will be done within Wi-Fi hot spots and my necessity surfing will be done EDGE.
 
I have had very few complaints about the iPhone, but this one is a really a big deal. Apple even made commercials specifically touting the ability to surf and answer calls at the same time. I do not have nearly as many complaints as other users, but i find this truly disingenuous.

I completely understand WHY it doesn't work, but it should have been explained up front. I've missed a bunch of calls today while surfing the net all the while having no idea that people were trying to get a hold of me.

Sure maybe people who have had another smart phones or PDAs might be used to this, but i hardly think that the average iPhone buyer would expect this after the onslaught of advertisements touting the iPhone's ability to multitask.

Are you a million times sure you were on Edge?
Can anyone else test this a bit? Cuz if true, this is a bad thing.
 
try while downloading email

I've found that it happens less frequently while browsing. It appears it will allow calls once the browser has loaded data. The best way to test is with email. One issue I just thought of, what happens if you are say, downloading a 5mb attachment? You might miss quite a few calls!
 
Outbound calling works!

Outbound calls will initiate a data disconnect! So this is great you can place calls, or make emergency calls! I emailed myself a 2mb file and during the attachment download made calls.. when I switched back over to check on the download while I had the call on speaker phone I had several messages about the data network being unavailable during phone use...

if it only worked the other way too....
