Sadly, with the pandemic, not only isVirgin not flying the non-stop route, but every airline took the opportunity to retire their remaining 747’s for the newer more fuel efficient twin engine wide bodies.View attachment 1768122
This is indeed sad. The British Air direct flight to Heathrow from Denver was a 747 pre-pandemic. We would sometimes be able to fly business class which for that flight included the upper deck. Quiet, spacious, wonderful. Really going to miss it. I think they will replace with a 777 which is definitely not the same experience :(.

The 747 was so innovative (both in design and marketing) that a mystique grew up around it that even a better plane cannot replace.

They used a 747 to transport the shuttle from CA to the Cape. Then they used one for a telescope transport before the Hubble, modified it with overhead doors that opened in flight at high altitudes for less atmospheric interference. Telescope had special isolated damping to reduce vibrations from the engines and the turbulence from the open doors. Took a 747 on Air Canada from Toronto to Vancouver, ended up sitting in the first row up against carpeted wall. Cockpit was up one level. Most boring flight ever.
