Here's another from eclipse day-this was me testing things ahead of time and is the full sun. It's still interesting, I think, to see the sunspots and other details.

D5, 300mm f/2.8 w/2x. This was handheld, lens leaning against a light post. I really regret not having at least a monopod-my arms were pretty well jello by the end of the eclipse holding this rig(a bit lighter when I switched to the D850, but not by much) and especially holding it nearly vertical.

I experimented a lot too with VR on and off since it can sometimes do crazy things with support and also at higher shutter speeds. Ultimately I left it on, as I couldn't see any difference and figured it couldn't hurt. This was a good reminder to me too of how obnoxiously loud Nikon's first gen VR is(it's not just this lens-I notice it on my 70-200 f/2.8 VRI and a few other lenses).

I got pretty lucky on my setup, as I only had to unlock the horizontal pan on my tripod to keep things in frame. I paired my E-M1.3 to my iPad with the OI Share app, so I could show the family a live view with no risks of eye damage.

Lovely stacking job!! Was this via your camera“fixed” on tripod and you simply stacked, or it’s a composite with sun/moon and you placed them apart as shown? What’s the time gap between images?

I’ve done this for lunar eclipse back in 2015, fixed on tripod and just stacked.
In my memory slightly over 3min 30 sec for each image.

First off, amazing photo!!

Thanks! These are all individual shots I took, composite. Used a tripod, 600mm lens with remote trigger. Had to adjust the exposure settings depending on cloud cover, slight dim sky that did come in at peak.

Had to look at the EXIF. First "bite" out of the sun was 2:24pm, about 20 minutes after it started (First shot I was able to get of the sun because of the darn clouds!) The one in the center is 3:08pm, the last one on the right was peak, 3:23pm. So glad I grabbed that! But after peak...another annoying thick blanket of clouds rolled in. I was able to grab a few more shots though through clouds using a lower ND filter.

This one was JUST after peak at 3:27pm
