A 787 Dreamliner at dusk. I used 1/4sec shutter speed, ISO100 and F/11 to get this panning affect. The plane was actually only rolling along at about 15kts speed (taxi out) but the slow shutter makes it look much faster.

This was hand held. Although you can use the 70-200mm F/2.8 with a wimberley head, it's actually no benefit because the VR system on that lens is very good.

Sometimes in brighter conditions I would use a ND filter to drop the amount of light getting through and enable panning in those light conditions without needing to use greater than F/11. Using greater than F/11 you tend to see every tiny speck of dust on the sensor if you haven't been religious at keeping it clean. On the D800e you could also use ISO50.

The 777 doesn't fly anymore for Virgin Australia. The A380 on the other hand is still common, at least for my country and A6-EEF flew Singapore to Dubai recently. This worked out nicely - the position of both planes to get them in the picture un-obscured.

I love using that 70-200mm F/2.8 VR II lens, such a joy to use handheld especially at night. And the D800e delivered incredible images with that lens, although they were slow to edit with a quad-core Mac Pro (back in those days). ;)
Thank you for all the info you give with your pictures. Without your description, they'd just be pictures of aeroplanes to me but you make it interesting. I like it when people give info or say where their photo was taken. 🙂

What are these? 🙂
