I guess probably the wording in that first post of each month needs to be spelled out pretty clearly -- but reality is that probably most people who come into this thread aren't starting at the beginning of the month and looking all of the posts, they might have stumbled on a post in the thread somewhere along the line, are interested and so they simply happily throw in their own image (sometimes more than one), not realizing that we do have a specific setup here, with specific rules/policies/guidelines.....

after you click all the quotes you want with the + button at the bottom by the text box there will be an option to “insert quotes” or something like that. ?

Ahhh! Thanks a lot! I've been looking for that but didn't see the "Insert quotes"
A mystery solved ?

What part of "YOUR best pictures" wouldn't a reader understand?

Also in reading the rest of the text, it's pretty obvious (at least to me) that the photos must be shot by the member posting them.

"Welcome to Photo of the Day. The POTD thread was started by iGary in May, 2006 and converted to a monthly thread in November 2007 by Arn. POTD is one of the most popular picture groups on MacRumors, often exceeding 500 posts and 20,000 views per month.

Photo of the Day is intended to be a showcase for your best pictures. There is no limit to your gear, just your imagination. P&S and film cameras are welcome along with DSLRs. There are no themes like the Weekly Contest, and no winners (or losers) either.

Policies

*One Photo per Day - Don't post more than one photo each day.

*Multi-Quote - To comment on several photos, click the "+ (Multi-Quote) button. This puts all your comments in one post. Multi-Quoting is required on all of the MacRumors forums.

*SFW (Safe for Work) only - This is a site - wide rule. If you wouldn't show it in a public place, then it's NSFW (not safe for work). Think before you post.

*Describe your photo - Tell what it is and where you took it. If you know the EXIF data of a photo, include it. The following EXIF fields are recommended: Camera, ISO, Focal Length, Shutter/Aperture and Lens."

ETA: From iGary's original post on May 27, 2006:

Thought it would be fun to share one of your best every day - doesn't matter what it is, just as long as it is decent (no nudes or overly graphic shots). You can add a picture everyday as long as it is different.

It does not matter when the picture was taken, as long as you only post ONE SINGLE IMAGE per day. Make sure to post a date, location and description.
Ironically, we all pretty much violate some of these policies all the time. I don’t think anyone posts a date taken, and location and description are often left out as well. The OP is hardly a charter, but it seems the main violations that get pointed out are when someone posts images not of one’s own work, or when folks post more than once a day. No one cracks down on multi-post. I guess it’s the spirit of the law versus the letter of the law? :D

Was just trying to give the poster the benefit of the doubt.

The "only your own work" clause is specified in both the Photo Association thread and the weekly contest threads. Although in the POTD threads the language isn't called out in a bullet point rule, it is strongly implied with the use of "your" throughout the post.

Otherwise it is very much an unwritten rule in this forum that all work is your own, unless being used as a credited example for something.

Well, now we don't have to worry about specifying our EXIF info since it is available when looking at the "Media" portion of someone's overall contributions to MR..... But, yeah, we seem to have definitely drifted off into posting images from one's archives, images which weren't even shot on a digital camera, etc., etc.

As for calling people out, I have indeed seen where someone who has posted more than one image per day has been gently, politely called on the carpet for that transgression, or when they've posted an image in the thread for a month that has just passed.

Yeah, that whole thing about posting the location of one's shot.....who the heck cares unless it is a shot taken in some interesting, exotic place where the photographer has been traveling? Thing is, these days, for the past now almost two years, people HAVEN'T been traveling or if they have it has been for limited time, to few exotic locations, and often just quick trips for specific work-related situations. Back in 2006 when Gary was initially posting his idea, the majority of participants were photographers who owned and used serious gear (DSLRs -- it was the golden era of DSLRs) and many of the members who participated in the thread did indeed travel.

So here we are now in 2021, on our way into 2022 in just a few weeks. Maybe we do need to review and make some adjustments in the current requirements for posting in the POTD thread, as times have certainly changed since 2006!

But, yeah, we seem to have definitely drifted off into posting images from one's archives, images which weren't even shot on a digital camera, etc., etc.

There was never any specification in the original thread that photos had to be recent. In fact it says:

And while I realize this is actually called the Digital Photography forum, there has never been a rule or even general statement saying that film photos are disallowed or that dSLRs are required. If that were the case, we wouldn't be "allowed" to post mirrorless images. In fact, one of the first several photos was taken on someone's iMac.

I definitely believe all photos should be taken by the poster, with rare exceptions (I had one last week as a comparison, and we also have a poster who is disabled and has someone else click the button for her), but there are zero limits on gear stated anywhere in this forum, unless it is for a challenge of some sort.

Also given that the concept of the thread is going on 20 years now, I think it's fine for some evolution. It doesn't have to be exactly the same way it was set up originally.

Gary was pretty militant about wanting to know a location of where a photo was taken. That's kind of weird to me since so many people are basically having to give their hometown, which someone might not want to divulge (easily at least) on the internet.

As I mentioned earlier, it was a different time, a different situation and there were different people participating -- and many of them, indeed, were serious photographers as well as travelers, and so they were happy to share their photos of Iceland, Greenland, France, wherever. Gary himself traveled a fair bit, and was actually a professional photographer. Also in 2006 the photographic options were different, as the iPhone and other Smartphones had not yet come along so not everyone had a camera in his or her pocket.

I don't think that anyone, even then, shared specifics of where they lived and all that, although they may have generalized somewhat, say -- "The Baltimore region," "Washington, DC and Suburbs," etc. That said, in the "privates," the area open only to contributors, sometimes more personal details were shared among participants in a thread, but even that was limited.

Sorry folks no fresh meat today, have to make do with preserves. After all that is the main purpose of photography to preserve a moment in time. Not only that it was a 3.2MP Olympus P&S stylus camera, which was all I could afford back then. Finally to add injury to insult this is a pair, as that is how I do my slides. Verticals are in pairs to fit horizontal presentations.
