Another view from a walk daughter and I took to Harrison Village's hot spring water source, early one morning last week during our stay in Harrison, BC -- tried to capture the "cool", wintery look of the deciduous trees at the beginning of our walk -- cool morning, but delightful weather conditions for this time in December.

A photo I took on my iPhone SE of a male Winter Moth (Operophtera brumata)...

Normally it'd just be another invasive species to the New England area with destructive caterpillars (little green inchworms), but the adult moths seem to be able to predict how the winter weather will turn out! If there are a lot of these moths out in November and December, we may be looking at a mild winter. And the way the El Niño patterns are looking, our region appears to be in for a winter with higher than average temperatures and only a little snow. Otherwise if there are only a few such moths out, then it means a really snowy winter is coming. (Only the male moths have wings, so I tend to see them more at night.)
Crazy to think how the Winter Moths seem more accurate at predicting winter weather than the groundhogs!
