Wherever I hang my hat...

I hesitate to criticise a pic that so many people like, but the composition makes me feel conflicted. The man's stance, and open arms, suggests freedom and space... yet the weight of rock seems to dominate and overbalance the image. Instead of identifying with the man, and looking to the right - as he is - my eye is stuck on the unrelieved blackness of the rock...

Ribblehead, Yorkshire...

I took a look at some of your series on Flickr and the photos are very good. I'll comment on this photo specifically.

I really like the subject of this photo, the people walking, especially the woman's facial expression. That said, I think that positioning the subject somewhat to the left may have added to the composition in this case (rule of thirds).

I noticed that you used a 135 mm lens. What was your motivation for that choice of lens?

I tried my hand at Street Photography in Paris last weekend. I'm interested in any feedback you might have on this series (over the next several days)...

Thanks... I agree about the composition suffering a tad with them being in the middle. This is one thing I definitely need to work on as I noticed a lot of my street photos had subjects at the center of the frame (see below). It's a rapid response type photography that I'm still getting use to :)

As for 135mm... it was an experiment, but I would definitely go back to it again for street photography. It provides just the right amount of distance in many situations. With a shorter focal length, approaching subjects are often aware of you before they fill the frame eliminating the potential for candid shots. I have also used 85mm in the past with success. Why do you ask?

Here's another for today... (I regret not being a bit quicker as I cut off the feet)

Thanks very much Ken. I'm usually decisive about how I want an image to appear but changed my mind as I felt that the original (below) didn't do enough to emphasize the detail in the hawk.

I agree as well but think it's great when a photograph provokes feeling, emotion and discussion even if it is conflict.

Perhaps this would be a great entry for this week's contest: Paradox.

Had a quick play with my Macro lens this weekend. Spent most of the time trying to work out why one of my SB900's wasn't firing off camera. As I suspected it was one of the settings was wrong. Good thing was having two, I was able to copy the settings from one to the other.

Anyway. Here is the picture.

No problem! I also have an instinct to place subjects front and center.

I was curious about the 135 mm because I was reading another thread in this forum about street photography and while most people there were advocating for 35 mm or 50 mm lenses, I think you make a great point for a mid-telephoto.

Yeah, that was my thread... I seem to be defying convention but I like the look.

First time playing with a PixelStick. They're a bit of fun.

I work with a guy who bought one. Very clever idea. He did this ghost getting out of his car.
But for the price, you'd need to use it s lot. I think I'd buy it use it a few times, then forget about it. Depends on your style I guess. Enjoy.
