Hopefully next week I can contribute to the spring shots...

The upstairs of an abandoned computer store, where the owl isn't pulling its weight and the pigeons have moved in, in plague proportions. Maybe it needs one of those Canadian owls? They seem to know what they are doing...

Thanks Ish...I do like the subtle colouring colour and complex shades of the female Cardinal.

Not just the bird, lovely though it is, I like the way it's greys are the same as the bark and the way it's set against the grey background with just enough hint of detail to see it's snowing. Great shot!

When you eat mechanically reconstituted chicken, is this where it comes from?

Nice hummingbird.

Very erie series this one. Hod did you find/access the location?

Yes, it's Albion Falls near Hamilton. There are dozens of easily accessible waterfalls in that area: http://www.waterfalls.hamilton.ca

Quick drive from Toronto, though the particular one pictured above required climbing over a guardrail and ignoring a couple of "trail closed" signs. ;)

Thanks themumu. I'll stop by and check it out this coming weekend. I really like the stepped look to the cascade.

Thanks again Ish...much appreciated.

Aren't we all! IMO it looks a little underexposed. Try increasing the exposure either in post processing (like Lightroom) or take the photo again with a higher ISO or smaller aperture number. You could also reduce the shutter spread, but unless you are using a tripod you could introduce blur (camera shake).
But most importantly keep shooting and posting. The tips I have learnt on here and other sites are invaluable.

I think the exposure is not a big concern here, but photos of flowers are very tough to do really well, mainly because there are so many that have been done already, it can be a challenge to add something interesting and fresh to another flower shot. Experiment more with composition, try to surprise yourself.

And in honour of the sunny warm day outside, a splash of colour from last year.

I was trying to separate subjects from background by pushing my X100S to f/2. I wish I could blur the background even further, but that's all I could get without going into Photoshop.

Thank you both ^^

Will keep plugging on until I can really turn out something less commonplace !

The problem is I am more used to a Panasonic Lumix that has very little user input, but which turns out reasonable photos without my help.

Cheers :)

You say "used to". Does that imply that you have access to another camera with more in regards to manual settings? If you have a DSLR (or access to one) and aren't shooting in manual mode I suggest you learn about the exposure triangle and try playing around with the different results you can come up with.

Yes, I recently bought a FujiFilm S2 Pro and then a couple of older Nikkor lenses, to see if I can learn to use a DSLR properly.

The Lumix is a compact and literally point and shoot but gives reasonable results, and although I think it a very nice camera I get the feeling it is taking the photos rather than me.

So, with the S2, a little more manual input and more composition required?
Plus lots of time spent getting to know it :)

Cheers :) and thanks

Hugh

Thanks, AFB. Another for today:

I prefer this one. I find the reader a bit distracting in the other shot. Keep up the good work.

Il really like the composition in this one. Lucky or craftsmanship?

Luck? There's no such thing as luck in photography :D

Beautiful shot. I'd stick this on my wall.

Great lighting really makes this shot.
