I'm used to hummingbirds but letting the dogs out one early morning before the sun came up I caught a silhouette of this thing flying around, was quick and sounded just like a hummingbird but was noticeably smaller. So I grabbed my camera, made some quick adjustments (as it was almost pitch dark) and snapped some shots. A quick Google search gave me the species and some info.

Forgive the color noise, the fact that I was even able to pull anything out as it came out of the camera nearly black is a testament to how well the Sony AR7III deals with low light situations. See the thumbnail for the raw file before post processing.

This is amazing! I guess from what I read it's not that easy to see one of these.
May I ask where did you see it? If you don't want to share the exact location, I understand
Just to know the latitude.. in case I have a chance to see it one day ?

Thanks, it was my backyard in the Central Valley (CA) luck played a huge role in this as it just showed up outside as I was taking the dogs out before the sun came up, I couldn't actually see it. The challenge was getting the camera settings right for the conditions and as I shoot hummingbirds all the time I had a general idea, just really needed to open up the ISO.

I can tell you that it did spend up to a full minute on my honeysuckle though, that's what seemed to attract it to my yard but it appears they'll only show when it's dark, I've never seen one before nor since.

I’ve seen them here in the Midwest as well, western Missouri, in a mixed garden (food and flowers). Like so many other creatures, they seem to like zinnias.

Variable focus glasses?
LOL! Nope! I decided that it would be fun to do a shot of "rose-colored glasses," taking advantage of those gorgeous pink azaleas outside the window... I set the glasses on top of two stacked glass shelves and fired away. Later, in processing, my finger slipped when I was in the middle of an adjustment, and I thought, "huh, that's interesting!" and deliberately repeated the mistake. :D

Long story short. Got bored, sold my camera stuff, got even more bored, bought a Canon R6 with the 85 f/1.2 (again)
Sold the R6 and currently waiting for my R5 (again) and a RF 15-35 f/2.8 (again), RF 70-200 f/2.8 (haven't had this one) and a RF 100mm f/2.8 macro (haven't had this one either)

Well well, it seems like I'm back in business soon again :)

I didn't want to deal with the large R5 files and purchased the R6 last year. Most off the photos I take during the summer are of wildlife plus a few macro-shots, but the wildlife ones increase in numbers quite rapidly when setting the camera in "burst" mode. During the weekend I photographed a moose in my backyard, and a few seconds I had taken over 100 photos, this the reason why I prefer the R6 smaller images than the R5's.

Nice hair!

The shot was taken in the center span, the break-even point of The Golden Gate Bridge.

Right in the middle, you can see the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. During this time, It may not seem like it was cold but it was freezing. Thankful, the SFO fog had cleared up and I was able to capture the Alcatraz island openly at the ocean.
