You're a snob when you shoot higher than 10MP
LOL!!! Sorry, I offer no apologies or explanations to anyone. I love my 61 MP and my 51 MP Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras! But, yeah, the results from them do take up more storage space when I'm finishing up editing images and ready to store them. Had to buy yet another external SSD this last month. My next computer is going to have another TB of internal storage.... It is definitely a choice which one has to make when considering camera bodies to purchase. For a lot of people the standard 24 MP is quite sufficient, and that's fine. I'm perfectly happy with the 20.1 MP on my RX10 IV with its one-inch sensor, too. Whatever works....

Not only that -- let me tell ya.....there's a price to be paid for that whole fast-frames-per-second speed, too, especially if in Continuous High or Continuous High + one keeps the finger pressing a little too long or a little too heavily when the camera is spewing out 20 fps, never mind going full-tilt at 30 fps!!!!

Are the results worth it? Sometimes they are, sometimes they're not, but that's all part of the game we photographers play, isn't it?

Well, if it is deemed "snobbish" to dislike poorly-shot snapshots of cats and dogs or zoo animals or some other subject -- or, gasp! -- even worse, those gawdawful selfies or, yuck, cellphone snapshots of people's breakfast, lunch and/or dinner, well so be it. Has nothing to do with the tool used to produce the image.....
I feel attacked. You’re all snobs. ?

It does seem to have taken a snobbish turn the past few months.

I haven’t noticed a change in sentiment and thought we were getting along nicely.

I was looking through my 6,000 + photos the other day and realized that many are of landscapes and animals and seem worthless. Some are good but most of my photography has been landscapes and animals. The ones of people are valuable and no matter the camera are just that. Yes even mr. Powershot is sufficient.

Are most of your photos like mine or are they of people? People shots are memories to be treasured forever. Was playing with Powershot this morning and discovering more and more features. Such a cool camera.

I would say I am 90% landscape over here. Though I suck at it, I try to capture timeless moody landscapes as I think they are easier to keep timeless and they don’t tie them to an individual. I also don’t do street photography as I just don’t enjoy it as a genre - since being hit for taking someone’s image in NYC, just not worth the hassle.

As for taking shots of people, I am reading more about portraiture and lighting because I want to be better at taking images of my wife and daughters. I am terrible at taking pictures of my wife (nothing naughty, just in general). Partly I think this is because the aspects of an image of her that I want to capture are different aspects to what she likes to see in her images. The way her nose Crinkles’s up when she laughs for example. There are few things on earth as beautiful to me, she thinks it is a flaw. Also, we seldom get time to get dressed up pretty and take nice images. Life routines in general and COVID has had her living in comfy clothes and she doesn’t like pictures of herself in comfort clothes.

Add to that, I like to take time taking images and their patience runs out real quick so I tend to not hit the mark. Also, lets not forget my daughters need to ruin pictures by pulling faces, messing up their hair or running for cover if they even sense I am getting the camera out.

All of this leads me to liking landscapes - oh and living in Scotland, you cannot not like a landscape as it is beautiful outside the main urban areas.

The more I look at this subsection of this forum, the more disappointed I am. Such hostility. Just shoot some pics. Me- I pic up a camera and take the pictures. All else is irrelevant.

Are you sure you are not mis-interpreting our humour? There is one topic of some hostility on here but that has been earned. We all get along fine and welcome anyone. I suspect your limited view of the sub-forum is maybe giving the wrong impression.

Sometimes humour doesn’t travel well back and forth intercontinentally.

It just depends on what people are into. Personally I don’t take photos of people unless it’s part of street photography or some special family occasion like a wedding or something. Landscapes and various nature shots reminds me of places I’ve been to and they also have various memories associated to them.

They maybe pointless to you but not to me.
THIS!

Also realize, that people specific may require model releases beyond personal use. Ignoring that, though, I prefer inanimate objects (landscape, wildlife, etc) outside of family. Not that I can't do it, it is a whole different dimension. Or as I explain in truthful jest with real estate photography - people complain, houses don't. Stopped doing business headshots of realtors as despite controlled posing, lighting shadow detail and correcting "imperfections" plus adding model glow - no, it's not going to meet your expectation of straight off a magazine cover that blunt reality you don't have the base material to work with, particularly for the price paid. Never say that reality to their face, but facts are facts but do the best with what you can. Ask any wedding photographer - which I will never be - about their most memorable bridezilla episode, as there is bound to be more than one.

OOOO…. No no no…. Don’t go the internal route. Mass storage internal is expensive and difficult to upgrade. Get a NAS solution. Much more resilient and easier to expand.

A NAS setup.....Yes, I'm thinking along those lines now, too, as that would be very practical and more convenient, with the amount of shooting I do and would work nicely since I have more than one computer, too. I need to do some serious research into them, see how exactly they work and are set up, and figure out which would be most useful in my current setup plus would move into the future easily as well.

If I could be so bold let me recommend a 4-bay device by Synology. 2-bays are great but the 4-Bay options are more flexible and easier to expand

Thank you! Right now I'm fairly busy with a project which will be ending at the conclusion of this month and then I'll have more time to actually set about investigating all of the options and such.... I agree with you that it makes sense to use a 4-bay option right from the get-go.

I'm curious about this "Instagram model" thing, too. What kinds of Instagram groups do they model for, and why? Are they paid? Are the images then shared on Instagram by the various participants? Who are they? Aspiring photographers or someone interested in a particular subject, such as automobiles or whatever?
The models are not paid and the photographers are mostly hobbyist, ArtofChi is one of the groups that plan monthly meets in Chicago and invites aspiring models to come out for photoshoots, we have up to 15 or more photographers that come out and maybe 5-7 models. We meet a the beach, grant park, the train station, etc. After the shoot the photos are posted to the page for the models to see and use as they wish. I posted a few shots from the meet on I think September photo of the day thread. That's the only time I really shoot portraits.

That's is very interesting, and it seems to be a "win, win" for both the photographers and the models involved in the shoot.
