It's nearly every time I open my photos app on my mac, the photos I've taken on my iPhone or iPad aren't synced correctly AND there are duplicates of photos that have already been imported under the import tab

I have my photo stream on.

Seriously this is such a basic feature and it hasn't worked properly since the terrible photos app was released.

I think a carrot could do a better job of writing the code

I agree. Though I suspect the issue is more iCloud/Photostream related.

The amount of duplicates I now have in my library is ridiculous.
In between iPhone, iPad and Mac iCloud seems incapable of synching properly.

And yes the "new" photos that have already been imported yet appear like "magic" every time.

It is truly 'breathtaking' how every time I open photos it 'just (doesn't) work'

Am I wrong in saying that this is a very very simple task??!!

Although.. apparently there were one or two new emojis so it is a silver lining that Apple have their priorities in order

And yes on the duplicates! I'd prefer it to not sync but not create duplicates than sync and create duplicates.... lucky for us, it does neither correctly!!

jeez... not everyone is having these problems. the Photos app is fine here, everything working the way it should.
stop whining, and ask for help; this forum is great for that.

(also, eat that carrot, do not wait for it to write any code...) :D

If anyone has any permanent troubleshooting solutions I would be very appreciative. I have tried all the usual!!

Im happy for you yours works.. but please don't begrudge me a whine after all my frustrations with this app :) - I'm critical because I care

Synching a la Photos is not trivial. It CAN just work, but when it goes awry it's a mess, and it's now in a closed loop that makes it quite difficult to fix at times. Perhaps you might want to move on from Photostream to other software that gives you more control, like Lightroom Mobile, Mylio, etc.

Yeah it's a huge mess..

if it were me, i'd copy all my photos to another folder, clear the photos app, start clean (you'd probably need to delete's preference file).

but google the issue, get ideas (that are better than mine)..
for example: http://www.macworld.com/article/294...cing-deleting-organizing-albums-and-more.html

I've lost count of how many times and hours I've spent trying to get things organised again, only to have an utter mess again in a matter of weeks

I have the same issue, it takes ages to sync often does not sync unless I disable and enable Photostream again

I gave up on Apple photo software within six months of buying my first (and it'll be my last) Mac. I finally, after a great deal of work, retrieved my photos and kept them separate, in nested folders, on my external hard drive (with a copy on my Mac). I have never come across such useless photo software before.

At the time I asked for advice here but all I got back were slightly sneering comments along the lines of "nobody uses nested folders any more" and that I should learn about SQL databases, whatever they are.

Even now simply moving photos around is a pain, unlike Windows where you could simply drag and drop.

Why am I persevering with my Mac? Simply because it cost so much I am reluctant to get rid of it. Three years down and three more then I can retire the Mac with a sigh of relief.

I've ALWAYS kept my photos this way -- within my own hierarchal arrangement of folders/files.
I then set up my photo editing apps to "reference" my own, singular photo archive.
The originals ALWAYS remain under my control. No other app controls or manages them.
(Aside: I'd reckon that 90% or more of most users don't know or care where their pics are stored)

If you don't like the way Photos manages your pics (I don't either), then use something else.
There are plenty of other photo management/editing apps out there.

You can even use discontinued apps such as Picasa and Aperture.
I've found Picasa to be quite handy.
For viewing, I'd suggest either "Lyn" or Hasselblad's "Phocus" (designed for their cameras but still works with non-Hasselbad pics).

I keep my photos in nested folders as well. Thus, I'm free to process and catalog images with multiple apps: DDP (Canon), Aperture, ACR, Infinity Photo, etc. If an app goes south--and they always do at some point--the images are in a non proprietary format and easy to immigrate to another app or system. Of course I don't use iCloud or Photostream since 10 TB of RAW images wouldn't be practical.

But, yeah, I briefly tried Photos and it seemed like a big downgrade for iPhoto and Aperture users. I disabled Photos auto load/open function. Very irritating to have that app open every time I put my CF card in the reader.

ok. but have you tried CALLING apple, or going to an apple store?...

Yes! - many times!

-

Cameras could hardly be more integral to modern mobile phones and the fact that Apple can't get on top of their most basic photo app is a scandal. I'm sure all it means is Tim Cook wants to release a new app that 'they think we're going to love' with the requisite price tag.. at least the feeling of being slapped across the face is reliable

I´m pretty convinced that many times when people have problem with Photos it´s because their own fault.
Not saying it´s like that in this case but I suspect it when you only rant and not asking questions.
I stoped count how many times people blame software when actually they don't have it setup it correctly.

Yes! - many times!

and what happened with apple? what do you mean by 'many times'? (just curious). they can't fix it?

wish i could help. i love the app; love taking pics with my iphone, sorting & editing them in photos, and deleting from either device when there's pics i don't want to keep. easy, and works.

try another genius. call apple again. complaining on this forum doesn't seem to be fixing it for you, and... it's fixable. since it works for so many people.

or go on craigslist, find tech help. someone should be able to sort out what's wrong (or... what you're doing wrong, asd Lappen71 suggests)

You have a healthy skepticism but in this case it hasn't served you the right answer

Many times means 8 attempts to fix it with a minimum of 20 hours spent troubleshooting. It's not that it doesn't get fixed when I troubleshoot myself, it's that it doesn't stay fixed.

I'm envious of you that it works and I know complaining here won't help but I'm beyond frustrated with it.

I'll find myself down the rabbit hole of trying to fix it again, and I appreciate your efforts to help me to a solution

you've tried EIGHT times with apple to resolve this, and over 20 HOURS? that's appalling. where's your apple store? their geniuses need new jobs... seriously.

have you tried calling apple for support? SOMEONE must be able to sort this out. it's science, after all... not magic.

meanwhile... have you tried with 'photostream' off? i have it off, and, again, everything works perfectly between my mac and my iphone...

Yes this includes calls to support. The problem with Apple support is that they assume there's nothing wrong with the software (no bugs) so it can be frustrating

but what are they suggesting? user error?? and have you tried using the app with photostream off? i am synced with my iphone with 'icloud photo library' selected (only), and, again, everything works...

i've dealt with apple support a good number of times over the years, and they've been great. i don't understand what you're experiencing... o_O

Long time iPhoto user and have been considering my options until recently, decided to move to Lightroom, I don't wanna get burnt again by Apple with Photos, and by the looks of things, Apple keeps neglecting and messing up with this.
