Do we have any rumors about when that Photos app for OS X is coming? I switched to the iCloud Photos Beta on my phone and it's really solid -- very interested in the OS X component of it now...

Sooner than that....Beta testing ongoing over a month ago. Took Apple about one month going from 10.10 to 10.10.1 and the next release to 10.10.2 could be out in January.. No one knows when the photo app will appear but my guess is sometime in Late January/Feb
Historically, there's always a shorter gap between 10.x.0 and 10.x.1 than other releases. 10.9.2 was released February 25, 2014, but the current 10.10 releases are a little ahead of last year.
But now we have the Public beta release of 10.10.2 yesterday, so me thinks apple will release the final in December. Just my guess
Apple were seeding betas for 10.9.2 last december. Didn't come out until Feb.
Apple's shut down for the holidays now.

I'm using the beta through iCloud.com and it's already quite useful. Photos you shoot on your phone are synced to the gallery very quickly if you're on wifi. Definitely pretty psyched to see the full OS X app...
After some brief internet searching I'm still a little clueless. What will this offer OS X users over iPhoto? BTW I do not like iPhoto. I feel like its a cluster F of photos that aren't as easily accessible by external programs as I'd like. So anything would be an improvement to me I'm just curious what those improvements would be.
...but Aperture will still be available to those that already bought it, right?
Considering I can still download OS X Yosemite DP4 it's safe to assume Aperture will still be available to download for those who purchased it in the past. To be on the safe side you can always choose to zip and store the .app file someplace safe.

I kinda wonder though if it's going to be an intregal part of OS X, pushed through a v10.0.x update, the way it is on iOS or a seperate App Store download.
I am very excited about the syncing and the app in general, but am very worried it will have poor organization.
If it is only moments, collections, and albums like iOS, that sucks. It needs to have folders to store projects/albums in so you can sort the photos easier. It's really a non starter for me if it doesn't.

Well hopefully, since it's replacing Aperture that means it will have some more tools than the bare-bones iOS system in the beta. Hopefully.
Given the trajectory of Final Cut Pro X and iWork apps, I wouldn't be surprised if it rolls out with some missing features, people flip out, and then over time they bring in some enhancements.
I know, that's what I am afraid of but likely to happen. Apple should have learned from those mistakes.
I agree with this, and I predict it will have it's share of problems for many of us unfortunately. Seems to have become the norm recently.
lots of speculation, theories, concerns...but no facts. when it's out, we'll all have a chance to try it, like it, hate it...whatever. hopefully early in 2015. guess we'll see...
I was thinking about the Photos app today and I checked to see that this page was indeed removed. I'm hoping Apple doesn't change their mind and just never release it.
[RANT]The whole Apple icloud Photos eco-system is an unnecessarily convoluted, part broken, insecure, mess. it needs stripping back to basics and rethinking completely - then it needs re-issuing as a free update to everyone that wants to use it.
Why anyone would want to share every single picture taken with their iDevice with others, or even their own devices, is beyond me! A huge majority of pictures taken by the general populous are crap and are taken just to make sure a record is kept or "...that perfect shot..." is captured! But keeping a record of our Ooops moments automatically, is asking for trouble, and releasing a "beta" of said sharing ability that actually removes the original images from said device and stores them in an insecure, internet accessible environment is ridiculous! Having to sort through multiple copies of near identical or edited images, is the bane of my life, with what is probably 10,000 photo's held in digital format dating back to the early eighties! but Apple seem to be making this the default action with their photo's in the cloud system.

How to fix it: The ability to select only Individual User created albums for Manual addition to sharing would be an ideal place to start.

Actually, if you recently bought either Aperture or iPhoto during 2014 to present, Apple will refund you. If you didn't know they both were discontinued.
I think it's rather wrong from Apple's side to still demand payment for two paid apps that are on death row. If they plan to kill both iPhoto and Aperture, make them free until they are gone for good.
Not to mention how they include iPhoto as an "App for Yosemite" when literally all they did, was to add compatibility for Yosemite.

I'd settle for RELIABLY WORKING .NEF support. We used to have it but Yosemite is a joke. Never seen such unreliable buggy crash prone junk in my life as a release OS.

Uhm, it's easier then it was before.
Previously, after taking a crap photo I had to erase it from the camera roll and then go in to Photostream and erase it from there and (if my Mac was on at the time) go and erase a 3rd copy from my computer.
Under the new system if I hate a photo I erase it once and it goes away everywhere.
That sure seems easier to me.
