Anyone want to bet that iCloud Photos will be Apple's next fiasco?

I don't think it will be a fiasco, but I do think it will lack a lot of features found in Aperture and/or iPhoto. Given the long lead time on this app, I hope that this is not the case, but their track record of releasing new versions that are gutted is too strong to ignore.

could go either way; it's not going to match Aperture in terms of features, but iPhoto is such a mess i don't see how it can be worse...
... unless they take away the ability to edit the Place manually.

Absolutely!

Even if you and/or I find it perfect or at least adequate there will be TONS of people complaining about something wrong with it.

And generally rightfully so because people get used to a certain way of doing things then Apple will force a change.

Like I mentioned earlier I don't like iPhoto's. For no good reason aside from the software frustrates me to the point I don't want to use. I found sharing photos to an external program a pain and I don't even care to learn.

I'm going to jump into their new photo app head first and just pray they don't change it. Lol.

I moved to Lightroom simply based on the fact that iPhoto is such a pain in the ass. I'm hoping the new photos app will be what were all hoping for. A simple yet refind photo collection and organizer.

When could they demo this, conceivably? Are there any scheduled events coming up? Like WWDC...

I would imagine it would be an unveiling of sorts. More than just an App released overnight. Apple doesn't do that.

I'm curious to see how they handle the ability to add faces and places in the Photos app along with modifying dates (for old album pictures that were scanned). Also the storage, my 20GB of photos = 64GB of iPhoto library space.

If that is all it is then that won't be a replacement for either iPhoto or Aperture and a big let-down.

Fair enough. I guess that's what I'm looking for. I hate iPhoto. Light Room is awesome for post, but not the cleanest GUI in my opinion for organization. Right now I'm trying out unbound for Mac. I really like the concept so far. It's very minimalistic, however, it might just be too simple.

I just can't seem to find the right photo organization app yet. Here's to hoping photos will be it!

Did you ever try Picasa?

You know what, I have not. Maybe I'm just being ignorant because it's a Google product. Do you use it, if so, do you like it? And for what reasons?

Love it! It doesn't require a connection/account with Google at all. It's very useful because you have complete control over your pictures and organization. Just have Picasa plug in the folders you have your pictures organized in, and it will view all your pictures. You can add keywords or edit pictures, and they'll be saved/changed in their original folders. Very easy to use! Picasa isn't like iPhoto in the respect that iPhoto requires internal organization/storing of your photos, and doesn't save externally unless you manually export. Picasa is different in that respect, and gives you full control.

After setting your library up, just be sure to go to View and check "Small Pictures" and "Hidden Pictures" so 100% of your pictures are viewed.

I'm going to give OS X Photos a try when it's released. I won't be surprised if it takes the same structure as iPhoto/Aperture, but if it's truly a good quality, I might give it a go. We'll see!

Thanks for the tip! I'll give it go. I am sort of liking unbound at this point, but I'll gofe Picasa a shot.

Meanwhile, it's 2015 and Apple has no info out on a flagship photo storage and editing solution. But many other software developers do have great solutions that address most all the criticisms found here. I can see waiting around if you either don't care much about photos, or use Aperture/iPhoto and have lotsa time and energy invested in your organization and especially non-exported edits, but the rest should just move on. Apple doesn't have anything but vaporware.

True, true, true!

Well, it's not in 10.10.2!

Yosemite releases are about a month ahead of Mavericks, so maybe we'll see it in 10.10.3 in April?

Cook says "Early as first four months, mid is middle four months and late is final four months."

So we could get it in 10.10.3 in April.

Anyone with Aperture has probably received the email from Apple by now and seen the new app, but for those that haven't: Coming This Spring

It looks like it might be an amateur photo editor's dream, having the ability to apply Professional looking effects, without Professional training.

I'll reserve judgement until I've used it, but it looks good.

Apple might release 10.10.3 on March 9th with more info on Watch etc...

No, its just been rolled out as a public beta, and hasn't been fully tested by the developers (they only had one build, I believe since the original beta). Its too soon
