On picture 2 it’s almost certainly lens flare. Edit- oops you said picture 1. Yeah lens flare. Picture one is fantastic, BTW.
 
I really like the composition here, but the image is full of artifacts caused by over processing by the camera software. Can you provide EXIF info from this pic? Was this taken with the zoom or the standard lens and cropped down? This looks as over processed as some of the 13 images I've seen. The branches on the right side look really smudged as well as the portion of clouds near the bottom-left of the image.

Again, not the photographer's fault. It looks like the software had a field day with this image..

I know, right? It looks like the oil painting filter from an early version of photoshop. It was quite dark, and I love that you can see the stars and blue sky with the clouds, but it made all the smears.
