When quitting Photoshop CS5 I also get this weird message:
"Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders."

I've already repaired disk permissions.

What's going on?
Help would be much appreciated! :)

Sorry if I'm asking the obvious, but when you do a Get Info on the Preferences file, it's not locked? And the permissions allow you to read and write?

I finally solved the problem! :)

When you encounter similar problem just go to: "Users> [your username]> Library> Preferences"
This is where all preferences are stored.
Just select all the files with CS5 in their name and hit CMD+I to access the information panel.
Under "Sharing & Permissions" set everything to "Read & Write", then apply the changes to all enclosed items (small cogwheel on the bottom of the window).
There you go. ;)

After I made all the changes Photoshop recognizes the ATI 4870 GPU just fine. :)

Well, FWIW I can now report that Photoshop CS5 installs and works fine with a 9400M. It also offers Basic, Normal and Advanced GPU acceleration. Not had the chance to see the performance advantage/disadvantage of each mode yet (it defaults to Basic when installed).
