I don't understand how a plug design becomes a point of national pride

Plugs may not seem important, but it was the worst thing about America when I visited! The damn things seemed to like jumping out of the wall with the slightest breeze, move of the cord or simply of their own accord. European style ones are only slightly better.

At least with a UK plug you know that bad boy aint going anywhere until you say so. Plus it is grounded and fused, so safer than just relying on a circuit breaker box by the front door.

Apparantly I'm not the only one who agrees-

Totally agree...seems like I am forever replacing the most commonly used outlets in my house. The pin retention gets lose and nothing stays in them.

Uk's plugs are the best ;) They stay where you want them and when plugged in ;) And there is less than an Inch sticking out from the wall so you can have furniture moved flat against it :p

The Italian sockets do look like that! Especially in Sicily, where my family had a holiday home for a while - all the sockets were that style, and not the European ones. Now if I can find a picture of the socket I will post it, to prove my point, but those sockets are definitely in existence, and in use in Italy.

They definitely use the European style in the parts of Italy I go to. Torino, Milano, Bolzano, Venezia and Verona all use the the same sockets as France.

Another thing the South is dragging the North down with!!! :D

Sounds about right... although in this case the South is dragging the North up with, since their socket is safer and better (The middle prong lets you use Europlugs as well as Italian plugs) - Also, its more likely to find the Italian one in houses over hotels I believe, as its used for heavy duty appliances, like ovens. (And yes, this does lead to running oven cables over sinks....)

How a ring circuit is any safer then a breaker panel is beyond me.
A ring circuit is not safer, but it provides twice the amperage. Lighting is usually run radially. You can run a total of 7.68KW off a single 32A ring. The change from 240V to 230V is purely nominal, to comply with EU standards. The voltage remains the same, at 240V.

I like the Japanese one, it's the simplest socket ever.
In my country, we followed the British socket design. I wish we can convert to Japanese socket.

I love it how MR members will argue about anything. If someone created a thread titled, 'Dog **** Smells Bad", we'd have no trouble finding those who would argue otherwise.

Actually :) it's true: recognising something as a "good" or "bad" smell is almost entirely a matter of early training, and quite a recent thing. Enclosed sewers were not the general rule until the 19th century in most places. Just FYI...

I like the UK ones. Went to Africa last summer and the island we stayed on had European style plugs (Spain, France, Poland etc), wasn't keen on them. I don't know if the sockets were faulty or my many adapters but they took some pushing to get in. Kept worrying I'd break the buggers and be stuck with no power at all.

I like how the UK ones drop down though. I've got some sockets above my desk and I put lamps just behind them. Not keen on the Apple laptop plug which is inching on being a cubic mile.

Don't really care about the plug on the end although I will agree the South African and UK ones are great but please can the entire world us 230V (or there abouts) as its a real PITA to try and run anything that pulls a sensible about of power when you are using 110V. Oh and I do love the fact that I can charge an electric car in about half the time of ones in the US and they pay more to get 240V installed.....
