3. My gf throwing a snowball at me.

We were in a famous historical farming village in Japan called Shirakawa-go, and still had time for a snowball fight.
What a great action shot!

How far is Shirakawa-go off the route between Kanazawa and Takayama and what do you see there? We took that trip by train and bus - great scenery! In Takayama, we saw historic homes in the Hida Folk Village (brought there from around the prefecture) but I wonder if it's worth going to Shirakawa-go too, if we get a chance to return to that region.

Thanks. :) The shot was totally set up, though! ;)

Shirakawa-go is a village full of farmhouses. You'd probably only need 3-4 hours to see everything. I went in the winter, which ruins many tourist attractions in Japan because everything looks so glum. In Shirakawa-go, I'm actually glad I went in the winter, although I hear it's stunning all the time.

Shirakawa-go is around 2 hours bus-ride from Takayama. I didn't get to Kanazawa, but my girlfriend lives in Nagano Prefecture, so I've seen a lot of Nagano so far.

Anyway Q, I'll post some photos for you. :) You're supposed to admire the thatched roofs. I guess they're like old English homes, which have the same style. The bus ride itself is 2 hours, and incredibly beautiful. It's a great way to see the mountains. I'm not sure what it looks like in the spring or summer, but I'd imagine that autumn and winter are probably the best times to go. Possibly spring-time as well.

Autumn = leaves changing colours.
Winter = mountains blanketed in snow
Spring = possibly some cherry blossoms(?)
Summer = stinking hot.

Hida Folk Village in Takayama was OK, but not as impressive as a place like Kurashiki, IMO. Kurashiki has a wonderful old feel, if that's what you're after. It's somewhere west of Osaka and Kobe. I forget where it is, exactly. :eek:

Anyway..... (off-topic) photos.

More from Shirakawa-go. I think my girlfriend is in 2 of the photos, so it's not "entirely" off-topic. ;)

Some photos of Kurashiki. If you're going to make the effort to get all way the way to Shirakawa-go, Kurashiki would be easier, and possibly better in some ways. The style of the buildings is clearly different.

You can tell I had a bit more time to take these photos, as my girlfriend wasn't with me at the time. :eek:

Brilliant photos, Abstract! Some of those look completely surreal.
And how cute are you two?
(and how fast was that cam to capture the snowball in flight so clearly? :eek: )

I'm on the right. My girlfriends fake mustache was much better than mine.

I'd also like to mention that I hate taking pictures of myself with photobooth because I always get screen-glare on my glasses.

^^Her moustache looks very prim....and French (?).

Thanks for that. However, I must say that the camera isn't that fast. ;)

Here's the trick: Before she threw the snowball, I set up the focus so that I was focused on a point that was halfway between us. We were around 10 metres (30 feet) apart, so I focused 5 metres away from me. Cameras do not focus on objects, they focus on distance. Any object at 5 metres away from me will be in focus. Anyway, I focused at 5 metres, and then turned the Auto-Focus off (ie: turned it to manual focus). That way, when I clicked on the shutter button, the camera wouldn't try to automatically adjust the focus. Then I watched the snowball get thrown and only took photos when the snowball got halfway between us. Plus I can shoot at 6 fps using my D300, and it also helped. ;)

Thanks, Abstract, for the information and photos. We did go to Kurashiki. The Toy Museum there was the best!

To keep the thread on-topic, here is a photo of Mrs. Q and me. OK, it was actually a movie poster I spotted in Kurashiki!

Her name isn't Jess, is it? From that half a face she looks a lot like someone I know.

No, her name is not Jess.

I'd post a real picture except they are all on her computer, and I'm sort of too lazy to walk to the other room to post one.

Well that's a shame. It does look like her, and the whole fake mustache thing seems like something she would do. Regardless, if she looks anything like my Jess (not really my Jess - my wife's name is Emily :p) I'm sure she's very cute.

Playing with the girlfriend's crappy Webcam! But oddly enough it takes better looking photos than my iSight. :rolleyes:

1. Awwww.
2. "What do you mean you don't want this ending up on the internet?"
