Thanks.
The shot was totally set up, though!
Shirakawa-go is a village full of farmhouses. You'd probably only need 3-4 hours to see everything. I went in the winter, which ruins many tourist attractions in Japan because everything looks so glum. In Shirakawa-go, I'm actually glad I went in the winter, although I hear it's stunning all the time.
Shirakawa-go is around 2 hours bus-ride from Takayama. I didn't get to Kanazawa, but my girlfriend lives in Nagano Prefecture, so I've seen a lot of Nagano so far.
Anyway Q, I'll post some photos for you.
You're supposed to admire the thatched roofs. I guess they're like old English homes, which have the same style. The bus ride itself is 2 hours, and incredibly beautiful. It's a great way to see the mountains. I'm not sure what it looks like in the spring or summer, but I'd imagine that autumn and winter are probably the best times to go. Possibly spring-time as well.
Autumn = leaves changing colours.
Winter = mountains blanketed in snow
Spring = possibly some cherry blossoms(?)
Summer = stinking hot.
Hida Folk Village in Takayama was OK, but not as impressive as a place like Kurashiki, IMO. Kurashiki has a wonderful old feel, if that's what you're after. It's somewhere west of Osaka and Kobe. I forget where it is, exactly.
Anyway..... (off-topic) photos.
