My friend has a Honda Civic like this one:

And yeah, it has the stick in a similar position but it's a manual gearbox.

Yeah, I've seen those before. Haven't driven one though, but it looks like it would be very awkward

The reason this is done is to get the shifter closer to your hands. That way your hands are off the wheel for a shorter amount of time. Obviously not a big issue with street cars, since split second reactions aren't super critical. But, in race cars, it is HUGE.

This was most prominently seen in WRC rally cars a few years ago. Since those cars use sequential gearboxes, they need just a push forward, or pull back to change gear. Which is fast. But, if they moved the shifter that little bit closer to the wheel, those 1/100ths of a second they save pay off big. Now, as with most top-endrace series, they've moved on to paddle shifters. But, for a while, it was a common thing. Which in typical fashion, meant that it did trickle down to passenger cars.

But as I mentioned before, it doesn't REALLY help much with the relatively slow paced action with passenger cars. But, it does at least make for a little quicker action in sporty cars. And for other styles of cars with dash shifters, mostly van/suv/crossover types, moving the shifter up there frees up a good deal of space down on the floor for storage and what not.

So, it does look kinda weird. But, in use, it does work quite well. I've driven a friends EP3 a few times, like the one posted above, and it feels good. Here are a couple shots I found of some older WRC cars, to explain what I've been blathering about....

This new Asian trend of putting the gearstick half way up the dashboard makes the cars look ridiculous and I bet it is pretty awkward to drive. That thing belongs on the floor!

If you've ever driven a Civic Si that has the shifter there, it's amazing. The short distance from the shifter back to the steering wheel makes it easy to make a quick downshift, go into a corner, then make a quick upshift.

Yes, you're right. It is the "original".
Normally I wouldn't put a sticker on this car, but these 3D silver stickers are great.

And how satisfied are you with your model? Which engine does it have in it anyway? I've heard there are some issues with fuel consumption - you don't have efficient dynamics, do you?

Here is my last car couple years ago..

Then last year the trasnfer case (for the AWD) locked up on me...
So I pushed it into the garage for some tearing apart

Pulled the engine + transmission

Had to go to Chicago (from Ontario Canada) and pick up the new replacement body(No engine)..

Then swapped the engine in and made it run..(that's me under the car ;) )

Ignore the uglyness of the replacement. This years goal was just to make it run and move. Need to save up some cash to get it painted, and change the fenders and install the other toys. Will post it again when it is finished (hopefully this summer)

The subaru started life as an 02 WRX. I swapped in a JDM STI Version 7 motor (8k rpm and forged internals), transmission (bullet-proof 6-speed), rear diff, brakes and interior. Some minor mods like KW coilover suspension, an exhaust and tune, and some exterior enhancements :). Ended up around 290 whp and was fantastic around the track. I had big plans (GT35R turbo, 500 whp on race gas) but then I realized it was retarded to be spending so much money on a car at my age. I moved on to Real Life (tm), married my HS sweetheart, and went off to grad school.

I sold the car and used the money to buy a new Mazdaspeed 3 (Mazda 3 MPS for the rest of you). It's bone stock and has stayed that way for a year and a half. You have no idea how much restraint that requires.
