Saltair is still being used for concerts. My brothers saw The Killers I believe it was very recently. They said it's not in very good shape though. I'd like to see it really brought back (again) but kind of doubt it will happen...

Yeah, I knew it was still in use. I would love to see it sometime.

I'll say Charlotte, NC. Mostly because it has absolutely no identity or charm, is horribly unfriendly to pedestrians, and it lacks any serious culture. Sure we've got some half-baked science museum geared towards children and the Mint Museum of Art. The Mint is an awesome building, but for an art museum, their collection sucks. I can only look at so much Carolinian pottery.

Walk? Why the hell would you want to do that? You've got a car that works just fine! The city has communities in the heart of town with no sidewalks (I live in one) and they budget $5mil per year which builds approximately 10 miles of sidewalk per year. 1800 miles to go, so only 180 more years.
I was in Charlotte for a conference a few years back. I had never been in a city that rolled up the streets at 5:00. We had trouble finding a place to eat downtown that was still open!

You ought to look up New Urbanism. Agree or disagree, it is an interesting concept.

We put walls between our houses, then complain we don't know our neighbors. We refuse to let them put stores anywhere near our homes because of noise and traffic and complain things are too far away. We don't build sidewalks because of cost and complain we don't get any exercise. We build McMansions on 10 acre lots in the country to get closer to nature, then complain about the smell of the dairy farm next door and spending 4 hours a week mowing the grass.

I'm familiar with New Urbanism and I like a lot of the ideas. Definitely not a fan of suburban sprawl.

It's a lot easier to eat in Uptown after 5PM now, but the planning here is seriously lacking. I live in a neighborhood, just a block outside of a historic district. Contractors are tearing down sub 1000 sq ft homes on lots that are 55' x 150' and putting up houses that are 4000+ sq ft. It's insane. I live half a block away from a new Lowe's Home Improvement. 180k sq ft on less than 12 acres. It's so massive that they have to put parking on the roof to meet code because there is no room on the property.

This town is seriously screwed up.
