It's only me or DriveDX can no longer be downloaded/purchased?

Yes, I was about to purchase it but for the second day in a row I am still unable to download the software from the BinaryFruit website. Even if I receive a license when I purchase it, if I can't download the software...

I just sent them an email.

Thanks.

Just checked then, their update server appears to be having issues, as well.

870 EVO works until the moment you reboot your Mac Pro, then it disappears.

Thanks for the warning. What about if the 870, or similar "problem" drive, is housed in an external enclosure, connected to the 5,1 by eSATA or USB 3?

People have been using with USB3.0 cases without issues, but I'm afraid that the same problems will continue to happen when connected via eSATA. If you can confirm or disprove, please report back.

So if you HAD to get a 2TB SSD, which brand & model would you roll the dice on? 😬

I'm thinking Western Digital Blue...?

There is no substitute to the Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB

And it has the lowest price tag ever at the moment...

Sorry - I should have specified SATA SSD. (I don't have an available PCI slot.)
For SATA I'd recommend also Samsung. I have SATA Samsung SSD's in use since 2012 and never had a single problem.
You can go for the Samsung 870 Eve 2TB without a blink, - avoid the el Cheapo QVO versions. They use chips that will degrade faster. Other than that, Samsung has very good controller chips and everything comes from one hand. And it will work flawless with the MP 5,1 - The best enthusiast workstation with the best forum on the planet.
Thanks tsialex for all your help over the years and your unmatched expertise.

Samsung 870 EVO is a source of headache with a Mac Pro, only works if you connect to the ODD cable or to a PCIe SATA card.

Btw, even installing a 870 EVO to the ODD bay, some people still have issues waking from sleep or warm booting, but most say that almost works fine there.

I honestly gave up SATA SSDs, too much issues recently, even with drives that everyone praise like Crucial MX500. Manufacturers now change completely the controllers and NAND keeping the exact same model or changing a letter - too much hassle to find a SATA SSD that works perfectly with a Mac Pro, even with a 2019 Mac Pro. A drive that works perfectly today, you won't find it again 6 months down the road.

DriveDX server issues are solved, you can download it again, just tested:

Thanks for the update. Sounds like a handy tool considering the SATA SSD drama of late. (I went for a 2TB MX500, btw.) However, while looking into this app, I've noticed that Disk Utility says SMART status is no longer supported on my 5,1. I wonder if DriveDx is compatible with Macs running Open Core? (in my case, Martin Lo's Open Core package.)

Still show "S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified" with my MacPro5,1 also running 12.6.5, but installed via @cdf thread instructions.

Code:
Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB:

  Capacity:	1 TB (1.000.204.886.016 bytes)
Model:	Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB
  Revision:	EMT02B6Q
  Serial Number:	*redacted*
  Native Command Queuing:	Yes
  Queue Depth:	32
  Removable Media:	No
  Detachable Drive:	No
  BSD Name:	disk1
  Medium Type:	Solid State
  TRIM Support:	No
Partition Map Type:	GPT (GUID Partition Table)
  S.M.A.R.T. status:	Verified

Btw, TRIM is intentionally not enabled for some tests I'm doing.

Okay, wait a minute. If I check the disks via "About This Mac -> System Report", all internal drives do indeed show SMART status "verified." Probably just an incompatibility with Disk Utility...

Is there any information on the box with the Crucial MX500 that shows these changes in the design?

Maybe a date production or other numbers.

I still don't know what is this business SSD from Samsung:

I found a datasheet for it. I don't know how to check if it works with Mac Pro 5,1. There are many technical terms.

They are not expensive, and there are plenty of them in Poland.

Can someone help me?

Maybe this could work with Mac Pro 5,1.

Crucial boxes and labels on the drives does not show the production date in any apparent way, probably the serial have that, but I don't know any way to decode it. Since it's been at least one year and half that this was discovered, avoid it.

More info here:

Thank you for the answer.

Can you look at this document for Samsung PM883 and share your opinion about it?

You will have to buy and test. AFAIK no one tested it yet, but one user with an iMac:

Btw, late-2013 iMac is already SATAIII, so, you could have compatibility issues and be aware that when discontinued datacenter SSDs show up in the market, it's usually 2nd hand.

Thank you for the answer.

I saw it earlier.

I still hesitate because Samsung provides only three years of warranty for this series. I always thought that business solutions have better design and a longer period for warranty.

I asked a guy from one of the popular online stores, and he told me that are brand new SSDs. I hope that I can trust them if I make this decision.

I don't know what it means for Mac Pro 5,1 users when I look at this:

TLC 3D-NAND

Not impossible, but this one is a SSD that was first produced back in 2018 and was discontinued long ago, could be factory refurbs or even 2nd hand from some big datacenter that is upgrading. It's the datacenter/enterprise version of Samsung 860 PRO. AFAIK the most recent production date is 2020.

I hope that I can trust them if I make this decision.

Btw, if something goes wrong from who you gonna get warranty?

Another thing to think about, Samsung does not provide firmware updates for datacenter/enterprise SSDs for anyone that does not have a active support contract. Also, Magician does not work with Samsung OEM/datacenter/enterprise SSDs
