I honestly think it's hard to go wrong with the 18-200. Sure, it might not be the sharpest in the corners at 200mm if you look at a 24x36 print under a magnifying glass, but for real-world use, the only downside is speed. VR helps, and you can always shoot from a tripod or other support if necessary.
For a walkabout lens (i.e., ONE lens that you snap on and pretty much never have to swap), it's about as good as it gets. I keep toying with the idea of picking one up myself, and probably would have, were it not that I'm trying to avoid buying any more DX glass.
