Please run PugetBench for After Effects on Mac Studio

Hi. Is someone with a M1 Ultra able to run the PugetBench for After Effects test? I'd love to see how it compares to PCs for After Effects.

Just did the puget bench AE test in After Effects Beta on my Mac Studio M1 Ultra 48core GPU / 64GB RAM machine...

holds up pretty well against fastest PCs...

Normal after effects (not beta) is slow tho! Slower than my 2019 intel MacBook Pro slow.

What makes it uncompateable? I have a loads of custom scripts that are .jsx i use in my workflow. Will they not work either?

Your scripts are fine I'm sure. It has to do with the API for PS that the benchmark uses. It's not just a script-based benchmark.

I can't run it as it doesn't install on the beta and the rosetta emulared version now crashes.
I can test other things though, like the adobe benchmark AE Project (which takes 4.23 minutes to render for me).

I just followed the links to install the extension with the Adobe creative cloud app…

Photoshop runs so nice on Mac Studio. Brushes don’t lag anymore and it feels like procreate somehow

They must have saved an old version of the benchmark--I know that version 0.8 was compatible, but they're already about 3 versions ahead on that benchmark (0.93 is current) and the newer ones all do not yet support AS.

Hello.

I can't run PudgetBench as the latest version is not compatible with Apple Silicon, however I can show you some utilization graphs after having cache-previewed (not rendered) 20 seconds of the After Effects Pulse Benchmark test, right before stopping the cache-preview.
I find seeing how the computer performs in previewing the comp much more useful, in the daily workflow, than seeing how long it takes to render.

While performane aren't mind blowing based on the price, I'm delighted to report that all the 20 Cores of the M1 Ultra are used and almost maxed out, therefore you'll see some decent scalability between the M1 Max and Ultra; this caused me to abandon the idea of sending this back in favour of an M1 Max.

That said I'd still expect better performance and I hope Adobe will make AE a bit faster.
As you can see, After Effects didn't use much GPU, so I did the right choice getting the 48-Core GPU model in favour of 128GB of Ram.
The only plugin I was able to max the GPU with was Trapcode Form.

Great, from what I'm seeing on PugetBench M1 Max 32-Core 64GB systems get anywhere from 950 to 1030, on the Beta.

The M1 Ultra 48-Core gets around 1100 all the time, and the 64-Core gets around 1300, on the beta.

Now I'm ever more tempted to send back my Ultra and get a Max, getting back 2300Euros, however I'd be missing the 128GB of Ram...
I'd also plan on learning other software (such as Blender), which takes more advantage from the Ultra.

Very hard decision...

The ultra with 128gb will make it easier to have a render in the background with either media encoder or something like render garden, while still being able to work efficiently. It should also last you at least 3 years and is probably deductible when you use it professionally.

Though Pugetbench is a nice even field comparison, keep in mind that your own workflow will always differ. For instance I never do any tracking in AE, which is a big part of the pugetbench score. So much so, it usually pulls the AMD Ryzen in front of the Intel chips only because of the tracking score.

It shouldn't be such a hard decision.
Unless you use it as a hobby.

After Effects is my livelyhood.
I can't deduct though, as I'm part of a very facilitated fiscal regime, the compromise being I pay less taxes in general, but I cannot deduct and the payment of the taxes themselves is simplified.

I don't care about render speed.
For me it's all about the speed of the ram preview and the normal workflow.

If you are thinking about the M1 Max, then maybe it makes more sense to get it in a MacBook Pro? Personally I feel the point of the Mac Studio is that it can have a chip in it the laptops can't. But I guess its more money isn't it.

I'm happy with my M1 Ultra, After Effects is quick! and in the next few days Adobe are going to be rolling out the native M1 support for the not beta version (its felt a bit weird working in the beta version today, but hasn't crashed yet, so that's good!)

I also use C4D and as well as for CPU rendering that seems to be able to use all 20 cores for things like volume builder.

Given how I was able to order a replacement for my noisy mac studio (I have the dreaded high pitch whine) while I keep my unit, I'll stick with the M1 Ultra.
While AE doesn't perform especially better, I still appreciate having 128GB of Ram, and I'd also plan using some software like Blender.

Oh sorry to hear about your dreaded whine. Didn’t know that was a thing, mine isn’t pure silent, but wouldn’t call it a whine, so guess it’s fine. Although this does make me wana do more reading on this forum about other peoples experiences.

With after effects now being M1 native, and how buttery smooth it is to work on it, surely you will have one of the best computers ever to use after effects. Be happy with it I guess. And make some lovely motion graphics / animations 😃

I used the beta since october, and I can't wait to test 22.3 native this evening!!!
